Fantasy Premier League managers face another important captaincy decision ahead of Gameweek 2. With double points on the line, choosing the right player for the armband can make a major difference in your weekly FPL score. Below, I’ll rank the five best FPL captain picks for GW2 before taking a closer look at our top two choices and a differential captain who could provide an alternative to the most popular options.

Best FPL Captain for Gameweek 2: Erling Haaland

Manchester City Forward at Crystal Palace (£15.5m)

Haaland clearly wasn’t on his A-game in City’s season opener against Bournemouth, squandering a couple of chances that he typically would put in the back of the net. However, there were some positives to take away from this outing. First, the (recently buzzed) Viking was much more involved in build-up within Enzo Maresca’s system. Haaland dropped back deep, received the ball and initiated the transition attack as a playmaker multiple times throughout City’s 2-1 win. Maresca’s fluid, interchanging style also gives more players an opportunity to threaten in the final third, forcing defenses to focus less on Haaland and create mismatches for the massive striker. I expect water to find its level on Friday, with Haaland racking up multiple goal contributions.

No. 2 FPL Captain Pick for GW2: Bukayo Saka

Arsenal Midfielder at Aston Villa (£9.5m)

Saka only played 67 minutes in Arsenal’s routine routing of Coventry last week, but that was enough for the dynamic winger to record a goal and finish with nine FPL points. The Gunners look the part again early on, separating themselves from the pack in terms of form and ceiling. Next up, they draw an extremely favorable matchup agains Villa, who were just handed a crushing 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brighton. If you want to pivot off of Haaland at captain after his shaky debut, riding the hot hand in Saka is an understandable decision.

FPL GW2 Differential Captain: Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool Midfielder vs. Nottingham Forest (£7.5m)

You’d be taking an early-season risk going this route, but fortune has historically favored the bold in FPL. Szoboszlai is everything you could want from a mid-range midfielder. DefCon capabilities, scoring and playmaking potential, all thriving within one of the Premier League’s stronger squads. Liverpool grinded out a 2-2 draw against Newcastle in their Premier League opener and Szoboszlai was key, finding the back of the net and amassing seven defensive contributions. Next up, the Reds draw a much easier matchup on paper against Nottingham Forest, who were effectively defeated by Leeds in GW1. Szoboszlai may not have the ceiling of Haaland, Saka or Bruno Fernandes, but his incredibly solid play gives him captain potential this week.

Who Should You Captain in FPL GW2?

Erling Haaland is the top FPL captain for Gameweek 2, narrowly ranking ahead of Bukayo Saka. Both offer strong combinations of matchup, role and attacking upside, making them our preferred options for the armband.

For managers looking for a less popular selection, Dominik Szoboszlai is an intriguing GW2 differential captain.
