The Tigers mercifully ended a six-game losing streak on Tuesday with a 4-1 win over the Rays. Now, the club will look to keep the momentum going and snatch a series away from the best team in the American League.
Who will take this rubber match? Let’s dive into this matinee tilt in Detroit and make a couple picks on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Rays vs. Tigers prediction, preview
Two things can be true at the same time. For instance, I can say that Troy Melton has been pitching like the Tigers’ ace since the Tarik Skubal trade, while also acknowledging that the 25-year-old’s underlying numbers suggest normalization is very much on the horizon. Across 15 starts and 90.0 innings in 2026, Melton owns a 1.60 ERA. Heck, since the beginning of July, the right-hander sports a pristine 1.03 ERA over his last nine outings. He’s been absolutely unbelievable. Still, Melton’s currently in possession of a .218 opponent BABIP and a 91.0% strand rate — the highest mark of any pitcher with 90 innings thrown this season. There’s a reason his FIP is 3.84 and his SIERA is 4.15. Something has to give at some point. Though, if Detroit fans are looking for a silver-lining, there’s a lot of room for Melton to regress and still be amazing. That’s the beauty of an ERA this far below 2.00.
Here’s a fun stat: Freddy Peralta has allowed more earned runs in his four appearances with the Rays (17) than Melton has all season long (16). The former All-Star would definitely like a little of his opponent’s good fortune. It’s worth pointing out that Peralta’s first two starts with Tampa were under pretty poor circumstances, as the RHP had to make his initial impression on the franchise at Coors Field and Sutter Health Park, respectively. However, last Friday in Baltimore, at a real MLB stadium at a normal altitude, Peralta conceded seven hits and five earned runs over seven innings of work. His 5.33 ERA in 2026 is the second-highest qualified mark in the league, trailing only Merrill Kelly (5.35). It’s not the type of company you want to be keeping.
If there is a small glimmer of hope for Peralta on Wednesday afternoon, it’s that the Tigers haven’t exactly been swinging the hottest bats in recent games. Over the past two weeks, Detroit ranks 27th in average (.218), 27th in wOBA (.290) and 25th in wRC+ (82). This is a lineup that is really missing the thump that Riley Greene (hamstring) can provide in the middle of an order. Top prospect Max Clark did mash his second-career home run on Tuesday, though. That’s quite promising, and a needed sign of things to come if the Tigers are going to pull themselves back into the AL Wild Card race.
Rays vs. Tigers pick, best bet
Best Bet: Tigers ML (-113)
I’ll say it again. Freddy Peralta has allowed more earned runs in his four appearances with the Rays (17) than Troy Melton has all season long (16). Even with the massive red flag that is Melton’s strand rate (91.0%), it’s hard to ignore the starting pitching disparity in this contest. The Tigers are 11-4 in Melton’s 15 starts in 2026. Today, they make it 12-4.
