The top 30 players in this season’s FedExCup Standings are ready to take on East Lake Golf Club in this year’s playoff finale at the TOUR Championship. The TOUR Championship will have a very different look and feel as the PGA TOUR announced on Tuesday, but for this year and next year, the FedExCup Playoffs will conclude with a 30-player, no-cut event. There are no more starting strokes to worry about, with every player starting at even par in their pursuit of the $10 million top prize. Think of cash game picks as lying back and playing a par 5 as it was designed, taking three shots before reaching the green, searching for a solid birdie. Scottie Scheffler ($14,000)
When he’s at his best, Scottie is simply unbeatable. He reminded everyone of that two weeks ago at the FedEx St. Jude Championship when he claimed his long-awaited second PGA TOUR win of the season. He struggled last week at the BMW Championship, especially in the early rounds, but he still finished a solid T-12 in the 50-player field, and after the event, revealed he was battling hand, foot and mouth disease early in the week.
With some extra time to recover, he should be ready to roll in top form at East Lake Golf Club, where he won in 2024. That win was helped by starting strokes, since he only had the third-lowest score of the week but still won the title. Even with the starting strokes to his advantage, his track record is impressive. He has finished in the top six in four straight years after last year’s T-4.
His game is so elite in so many ways that it’s great for any golf course, but this week’s course rewards long, accurate driving and good approach work, both of which are hallmarks of Scottie’s game.
Even though he only won twice this season, Scheffler has led this elite field in Strokes Gained: Approach, Total Strokes Gained, and Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green over the last six months. He comes into this week with an impressive run of 12 top-15 finishes in his last 13 events. Even if he doesn’t win, he has been such a regular near the top of the leaderboard that he is a reliable anchor for your cash game lineups this week.
He’ll be a popular play, but for cash game builds, he brings too much win equity to overlook and not playing him could take you right out of contention since he’ll be so popular.
Collin Morikawa ($8,100)
When Scheffler claimed his FedExCup Championship at the TOUR Championship in 2024, Morikawa had the lowest score of the week, finishing as the solo runner-up. That was his third top-six finish in his first five career appearances at this week’s venue, but last season, he tailed off with a disappointing T-19.
The 29-year-old has been in much better form throughout this season, though, and he could be peaking at just the right time. Last week, he caught fire on his way to a T-4 at the BMW Championship. Surprisingly, it was his putter that led the way as he paced the field in total length of putts made and ranked second in birdies, seventh in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee, and in the top 15 on both Strokes Gained: Approach and Strokes Gained: Putting.
Typically, Morikawa excels tee-to-green and is sometimes held back by shaky putting, but last week, his putter looked in prime condition.
Coming into this week, Morikawa has reeled off four top-20 finishes in his last five events, including a T-3 at the Travelers in a no-cut, limited-field event like this week’s. He has enough course history and current form to be a very solid play this week in your cash game picks, whether you choose to stack him next to Scheffler or use him to anchor a balanced build across the board.
Viktor Hovland ($7,300)
Hovland is another player with an excellent history at East Lake Golf Club who has shown his potential for spike upside with several strong showings lately. He came through with a win at the Travelers Championship in the final Signature Event of the season and he started the playoffs with a T-19 at the St. Jude Championship and T-33 in the BMW Championship.
He struggled overall at the BMW Championship, but he had one exceptional round with a 63 on Friday. If he can find that kind of production in his return to East Lake, he could be right in the mix once again at one of the courses that has been one of his strongest historically. In 2023, Hovland won the TOUR Championship and he has finished T-15 or better in five consecutive seasons. At this price point, another finish in the top half of the field would be enough to make him a very solid value, which is one of the reasons he makes sense at under $7,500.
In the last three months, he ranks sixth in the field in Strokes Gained: Approach and 10th in Total Strokes Gained. Last week, his putting looked ok, but his approach play and work around the green were not nearly as strong.
Even though he has been inconsistent at times over the last few tournaments, his course history shows a high enough floor to make him a great value at this salary, and if he goes off for a spike week, he could help carry your star-studded cash game picks to victory. Hovland’s salary leaves plenty of room for other stars, and he’s a strong play himself as well.
