Tottenham’s season couldn’t have got off to a worse start, getting completely dominated against Brentford in the opening Premier League match and losing 3-0. They need to put that game in the back of their minds and forget about it, as the next fixture is just around the corner. Spurs face Championship side Charlton in the second round of the EFL Cup and will be looking to bounce back against a lower league opponent.
Charlton fell to Cambridge United in this competition last season, a team who was in League Two at the time. They got a taste of Premier League opposition in the third round of the FA Cup, losing 5-1 to the Blues at home. Tottenham may not be what they once were, but there are levels to this game. Spurs were knocked out of both domestic cups by Premier League teams a season ago, losing to Aston Villa in the FA Cup and Newcastle in this competition. They may suffer the same fate at some point of this tournament, but I don’t see them having any trouble getting past Charlton, especially with the game being played in North London.
I’m going for a comfortable Tottenham win here in a game that will feature at least four goals scored between the teams.
