The Guardians are currently one game below .500, but are tied with the Rangers for the final Wild Card spot in the American League.
However, that might not properly put into perspective how well Cleveland is playing at the moment. After sweeping the Rockies in Colorado, the Guardians have won four in a row, and they’re still staring down one of the softest remaining schedules in all of baseball. If you’d been wondering why FanGraphs is giving Cleveland very favorable 46.6% odds to make the postseason, now you know why.
Can the Guardians stay hot versus the lowly Angels? Let’s dive into this American League tilt and make a couple picks on the DraftKings Sportsbook.
Guardians vs. Angels prediction, preview
If the Guardians do end up making a late-season playoff push for the second straight year, Parker Messick will be a huge reason why. The 25-year-old is just as much an AL Cy Young candidate as he is a Rookie of the Year hopeful, as Messick enters the day with a sterling 2.54 ERA and a 2.93 xERA across 149.0 innings. Messick “lost” his last outing on August 19 against the Giants, but that’s only because Cleveland’s lineup couldn’t get him any run support. Messick allowed just a single earned run over 6.2 innings, striking out 10 and walking none. Messick hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since all the way back in June. The kid is an absolute stud.
Will the Angels be the team to end Messick’s eight-start streak? I have my doubts! August has not been a great month for Los Angeles in a run scoring capacity, as the team ranks dead-last in ISO (.104), wOBA (.273), expected wOBA (.276) and wRC+ (71). Mike Trout and Zach Neto aren’t hitting for any consistent power, while Moises Ballesteros has been a massive disappointment since being brought in as a mini reclamation project at the trade deadline. The former top prospect is slashing a putrid .174/.230/.217 with a 24 wRC+ in his 74 plate appearances as an Angel.
With that said, it’s not all doom and gloom for Los Angeles, which appears to be smack in the middle of yet another rebuild. George Klassen was re-called to the bigs after the Angels dealt away Jose Soriano, and the 24-year-old has looked like he belongs in his brief time in the majors. In his last three starts, encompassing 17.0 innings, Klassen has maintained a 1.59 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP. That includes tossing seven scoreless frames in his most recent outing against Houston last week. The RHP will surely need to shore up a 17.8% walk rate, but in general, the signs are positive for a franchise that needs a silver lining.
Guardians vs. Angels pick, best bet
Best Bet: Under 7.5 (-106)
Parker Messick has a 1.88 ERA since the beginning of July, while the Angels sit dead-last in ISO (.104), wOBA (.273), expected wOBA (.276) and wRC+ (71) in August. It’s not like the Guardians have many impressive offensive showings, either. The club’s .135 ISO in 2026 is the second-lowest mark in MLB.
Strong Lean: Parker Messick to Record a Win (-108)
It’s risky, but there’s more value here than on the Guardians as a road favorite on the moneyline. Cleveland’s bullpen leads the league in strikeout rate (26.0%) and is fourth in SIERA (3.56). If they can get a lead early, the back-end relievers should be able to hold on to Messick’s win.
