Boston has won four of five while scoring 35 runs, including 26 during its Arizona series. The Red Sox then found two different routes past San Francisco, winning 6-4 and 3-2. Saturday required three ninth-inning runs after Boston managed four hits through eight innings. San Francisco has scored only 10 runs across five games and lost three straight. The Giants are 5-12 during August, 23-44 away, and 25 games below .500. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the San Francisco Giants.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Red Sox vs. Giants prediction, preview
Jake Bennett’s 3.46 season ERA disguises a sharp August downturn. He has allowed 16 hits, 11 earned runs, and six walks across 15 innings this month. That stretch produces a 6.60 ERA and 1.47 WHIP after Bennett previously won five consecutive decisions. Pittsburgh reached him for four runs across four innings during his latest start. Oakland scored four across 5 1/3 innings before that. Bennett has still struck out 15 during the three-start slide, suggesting execution has declined more than raw stuff.
His pitch data supports that distinction. Bennett owns a 3.19 xERA, .278 xwOBA allowed, 36.4% hard-hit rate, and 6.2% barrel rate. His 83.4-mph changeup produces a 33.9% whiff rate and .289 slugging percentage. However, the 93-mph four-seamer has become more hittable when Bennett falls behind. His August walk rate has more than doubled his 5.3% season mark. Bennett must recover early-count command against a Giants lineup carrying several aggressive right-handed bats.
Matt Wilkinson offers San Francisco a fascinating, highly temporary advantage. He allowed one hit across two scoreless innings during Wednesday’s debut. Wilkinson previously threw seven shutout innings with nine strikeouts during his final Triple-A appearance. His fastball averaged 89.9 mph in Sacramento, yet minor-league hitters batted .172 against it. Wilkinson hides the ball behind his body before releasing from a low slot. That deception helped him accumulate 390 strikeouts across 313 2/3 professional innings. His 5.15 Triple-A ERA still warns against extending him deep into Sunday.
The Giants’ best current contact belongs to Willy Adames, who has homered during both Fenway games. Andrew Knizner also homered Saturday and supplied three hits. Rafael Devers has two homers, four doubles, and seven walks across 10 games. However, he has batted only .194 during that stretch and owns a .545 OPS against lefties. Devers still carries a 92.6-mph exit velocity, 50.9% hard-hit rate, and 10.8% barrel rate. The power remains present, although his deteriorating contact creates fewer useful collisions.
Giants vs. Red Sox pick, best bet
Boston’s offense has received broader production. Caleb Durbin reached three times Saturday before opening the ninth with a walk. Nick Sogard supplied the tying double, while Wilyer Abreu created the winning play. Willson Contreras owns a .403 wOBA, .384 xwOBA, and 14.3% barrel rate. Ceddanne Rafaela adds a .286 average with 16 homers and 16 steals. Boston can score without waiting for Contreras because its lower order continues creating traffic.
The bullpen gap becomes especially important with Wilkinson facing another abbreviated workload. Boston relievers own a 2.92 ERA and 1.14 WHIP, while San Francisco sits at 4.25 and 1.42. The Giants’ August staff has issued 4.19 walks per nine with only a 19.8% strikeout rate. That combination has produced a 1.37 WHIP despite an unsustainably low 0.54 HR/9. Sam Hentges surrendered Saturday’s three-run rally, while Boston preserved Aroldis Chapman. Comfortable 73-degree conditions should also support Boston’s right-handed contact at Fenway.
San Francisco’s best opportunity arrives before Bennett settles or Wilkinson departs. That possibility makes Boston’s −204 moneyline unappealing. The full-game run line captures Boston’s lineup depth and substantial bullpen advantage at an even price. Wilkinson’s unfamiliar delivery can control one trip through the order. Boston should command the remaining six innings against a road team that has lost seven consecutive series.
