Arizona enters Sunday’s rubber match at 68-62, six games better than Cincinnati. Yet this series has produced two radically different scripts. Arizona won Friday 9-0 before Cincinnati answered with an 11-5 demolition Saturday. The Reds generated a season-high 16 hits and four homers after losing six of eight. Arizona has scored 14 series runs despite missing Ketel Marte, while Cincinnati has supplied 11 extra-base hits. Both offenses have demonstrated multiple scoring pathways inside Chase Field. Saturday’s eruption also changed the complexion of a matchup carrying considerable starter volatility. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cincinnati Reds.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Diamondbacks vs. Reds prediction, preview
Andrew Abbott’s 4.07 ERA and 1.40 WHIP contain more traffic than his established reputation suggests. His 108 strikeouts against 66 walks produce a modest 1.64 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Abbott owns a 4.76 ERA across his last five starts, although Tuesday brought 6⅓ innings of two-run baseball. His 92.5-mph four-seamer accounts for 44.7% of his arsenal. Abbott supports it with a curveball, changeup, and sweeper, but inconsistent fastball command frequently compromises those secondaries. Arizona’s current hitters own a .322 wOBA and .426 expected slugging percentage against him. The Diamondbacks also bat .274 against left-handed pitching. Abbott’s fly-ball shape becomes particularly dangerous after avoidable walks.
Mitch Bratt presents the more obvious regression candidate. He owns a 4.17 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and 5.37 FIP across 36⅔ innings. His 25 strikeouts barely exceed 22 walks, producing approximately 5.4 walks per nine innings. Bratt throws his 91-mph four-seamer 43% of the time, yet that pitch generates only a 17.4% called-strike-plus-whiff rate. His 79-mph slurve produces better results, but hitters can eliminate it whenever Bratt falls behind. Boston scored three runs and chased him after three innings Monday. Cincinnati can stack right-handed bats around switch-hitting Elly De La Cruz, forcing Bratt’s fastball into hitter-friendly counts. His .345 expected wOBA supports sustained baserunner pressure.
Cincinnati’s hottest bats also carry legitimate contact foundations. De La Cruz owns a 93.8-mph average exit velocity, 51.3% hard-hit rate, and 14% barrel rate. He collected four hits Saturday and launched his 21st homer approximately 450 feet. JJ Bleday completed the cycle and also reached 21 homers. His .349 xwOBA, 41.4% hard-hit rate, and 10.1% barrel rate validate more than one spectacular evening. Arizona answers with Gabriel Moreno, whose hitting streak reached 15 games Saturday. Moreno carries a .371 wOBA, .372 xwOBA, and 43.5% hard-hit rate. His .421 wOBA against four-seamers directly threatens Abbott’s primary offering. Tim Tawa and Nolan Arenado also homered Saturday.
Reds vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet
The strongest under argument involves recent relief performance. Cincinnati’s bullpen owns a 2.92 ERA across the last seven days, substantially outperforming its 4.52 season mark. Emilio Pagán remains rested after last pitching Wednesday. Arizona also avoided its primary leverage relievers during Saturday’s blowout. Bratt has delivered two excellent recent home starts, combining for 13 innings and two earned runs against San Diego and Colorado. Abbott remains capable of suppressing damage when his fastball finds the upper boundary. Still, neither counterweight solves the starters’ collective 88 walks across 176 innings. Those free baserunners amplify every double, stolen base, and misplaced fastball.
Chase Field’s roof will remain closed, removing wind and temperature uncertainty from the handicap. Marte’s knee injury weakens Arizona, but the Diamondbacks still possess a right-handed contact core tailored for Abbott. Cincinnati’s injuries have damaged its depth, yet Saturday showed how dangerous its healthy top half remains. The moneyline demands trusting Abbott or Bratt, while Arizona’s −140 price offers little protection. Over 9 provides a push at nine and wins whenever either starter requires an early hook. Two vulnerable strike-throwers, credible barrel production, and 25 series runs make offense the cleanest position.
Best bet: Over 9 (+102), playable to −110
Projected score: Diamondbacks 6, Reds 5
Best bet: Diamondbacks vs. Reds o9.0 total runs (+100)
