A 15-game, 30-team MLB slate is on tap for Saturday. For those looking to cash in quickly on a bet, nothing makes more sense than an NRFI. With that being said, there’s more to this one than meets the eye. Some pitchers thrive early, while others take more time to get settled in than others. Blue Jays vs. Yankees NRFI (-165)
Dylan Cease gets the nod this afternoon in the Bronx, making his 24th start of the season for Toronto. The AL Cy Young candidate has been on a roll, posting a 1.49 ERA over his last eight outings. That includes a 6.1-inning, two-run showing last weekend vs. New York. The Yankees come into this one in desperate need of production on offense. They’ve scored the third-fewest runs in baseball (153) since the start of July. In addition, the Pinstripes come into this one on a whopping 20-game NRFI streak. It’s difficult to see that changing today against one of the sport’s premier hurlers.
Ryan Weathers hasn’t been too shabby either. The southpaw has been a force on the mound over the past few weeks. He’s allowed one earned run or fewer in six of his previous seven appearances. He spun a 7.1 inning, one-run gem last week against the Blue Jays. Canada’s team has been a massive disappointment at the plate, averaging the league’s second-fewest runs per game (3.94). In addition, Toronto ranks last in the majors in YRFI rate (21.54%) and OPS vs. left-handed pitching (.638). Weathers shouldn’t have too much difficulty silencing these bats on Saturday.
Tigers vs. Royals NRFI (-115)
Detroit’s pitching, even without Tarik Skubal, has been a strength. Tonight’s starter, Drew Anderson, isn’t a household name. Over 76.1 innings pitched, the reliever owns a 4.01 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 87 strikeouts (10.3 K/9). Still, he’s done a solid job for manager A.J. Hinch when called upon as an opener. During seven career starts, the right-hander has yet to surrender a first inning run. In comparison, the Royals are averaging the ninth-fewest runs per game in baseball (4.20). Over his last 14.0 frames, Anderson has recorded a 2.57 ERA.
Kansas City will counter with grizzled veteran Michael Wacha. The two-time All-Star has been a bright spot in this rotation. Through 155.2 innings of work (25 starts), he’s posted a 3.58 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 120 strikeouts (6.9 K/9). Even more important, the 34-year-old has been excellent in the first inning. Over the past two seasons, Wacha has produced a stellar 84% NRFI rate. The Tigers wield an above-average offense, but this matchup has given them problems. KC’s starter has only given up two earned runs during his two meetings with Detroit this season (1.29 ERA).
