Texas Rangers vs. Washington Nationals prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 8/19/26

Washington reaches the second game of this series at 60-67 overall and 33-31 away. The Nationals have lost four straight and six of seven, including Tuesday’s flat 5-0 defeat. That loss continued a 6-15 slide since Washington stood 54-52 and hovered one game outside the wild card. Texas improved to 62-64 and sits only one game behind Houston in the unusually compressed AL West. The Rangers returned from a 2-5 road trip and immediately scored during each of Tuesday’s first three innings. Their 33-27 home record gives them a substantial venue split, although their offense has rarely supported that advantage consistently.
Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Texas Rangers and the Washington Nationals.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Rangers vs. Nationals prediction, preview

Cade Cavalli owns a 10-5 record, 3.36 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 151 strikeouts across 136⅔ innings. He has allowed 129 hits, 41 walks, and 15 homers, producing 3.68 strikeouts per walk. Cavalli has gone 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA across his past seven starts. That stretch includes 46 strikeouts, 10 walks, and 44 innings, with six innings completed every time. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh Thursday before finishing eight scoreless innings against Chicago. Cavalli permitted one hit, walked two, struck out 10, and still reached 98-99 mph beyond his 95th pitch. That combination of velocity retention and late-inning command gives Washington a rare chance to hide its bullpen.

Cavalli’s breaking pitches explain why his recent improvement carries more weight than a few favorable box scores. He throws his knuckle curve 26.6%, holding hitters to a .203 average and .263 slugging percentage. The pitch owns a 38.2% whiff rate and has produced strikeouts in 37.7% of completed plate appearances. His 13.2% sweeper has been even nastier, allowing a .104 average, .117 slugging percentage, and .184 wOBA. Cavalli’s four-seamer remains the concern, yielding a .301 average, .494 slugging percentage, and 46% hard contact. His sinker has allowed a .358 average and .408 wOBA, while the cutter carries a .640 slugging percentage. Those weaknesses explain his 3.95 xERA, which sits noticeably above his 3.36 ERA.

Texas has the left-handed bats required to attack those fastballs, although the lineup has produced only 33 runs across 10 games. The Rangers have batted .221 during that stretch and own a modest .243/.316/.395 season line. Corey Seager presents the clearest threat with 91.5 mph average exit velocity, 46.7% hard contact, and 15.4% barrels. His .339 expected wOBA also exceeds his actual .305 mark, suggesting better contact than the results indicate. Wyatt Langford reached base three times Tuesday, but his hard-hit rate has fallen from 48.4% to 39%. Jake Burger carries 21 homers and 73 RBIs, while Joc Pederson leads Texas with 22 homers. Cavalli can work backward with curves and sweepers before elevating velocity beyond their pull-side barrels.

Nationals vs. Rangers pick, best bet

Kumar Rocker gives Washington a much friendlier matchup after Tuesday’s encounter with Cal Quantrill. Rocker owns a 4-9 record, 4.50 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts across 116 innings. August has produced 21 hits, nine walks, 12 earned runs, and an 8.10 ERA across 13⅓ innings. He walked five Athletics during his last start and surrendered all three runs during a ragged first inning. Rocker’s slider remains excellent, holding hitters to a .187 average with a 40.7% whiff rate. His sinker has allowed a .322 average and .483 slugging percentage, while the cutter has yielded .327 and .577. Washington’s .250/.326/.436 lineup can attack those two pitches through CJ Abrams, Daylen Lile, Keibert Ruiz, and Abimelec Ortiz. Abrams owns a .280/.355/.531 line, 29 homers, 91 RBIs, 23 steals, and 10.1% barrels.

James Wood’s oblique injury removes 30 homers and Washington’s most intimidating source of left-handed damage. Abrams has also batted .200/.289/.325 across 10 games, creating an obvious argument against the underdog. However, Rocker’s 9.3% walk rate can generate traffic without Washington requiring sustained hard contact. Ortiz recently homered three times across four games, including a three-run shot behind Cavalli’s masterpiece. Texas owns the better bullpen with a 4.14 ERA, led by Jacob Latz’s 1.77 mark and 28.2% strikeout rate. Washington ranks 28th at 5.16, although Cavalli has averaged nearly seven innings across his past seven starts. The 97-degree forecast should close Globe Life Field’s roof, removing wind and heat from the scoring equation. Cavalli offers the largest matchup advantage, and +120 compensates for Washington’s bullpen and Wood’s absence.
