This opener begins a five-game, four-day Cincinnati siege created by May’s rainout. Every bullpen choice therefore carries a second-game shadow. St. Louis arrives 63-61 after winning four consecutive series and pouring 19 runs into its final two games at Wrigley. Cincinnati sits 59-64, has dropped two straight, and owns little scheduling mercy after a taxed weekend. The Cardinals can play Game 1 aggressively because their principal relievers enter in cleaner condition. Cincinnati must distribute 18 innings while protecting several arms already worked past comfortable limits. That asymmetry matters before either lineup begins pecking at Great American Ball Park’s inviting dimensions. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Cincinnati Reds and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Reds vs. Cardinals prediction, preview
Quinn Mathews makes his second major-league start after holding Toronto to two runs across five innings. He allowed six hits, walked three, and struck out three, reaching 96 mph when leverage demanded extra amperage. His Triple-A résumé carries more predictive muscle: a 3.27 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, and 120 strikeouts across 99 innings. The changeup gives him a legitimate weapon against right-handed lift, while his fastball shape attacks above barrels. His nine debut balls in play averaged only 86.3 mph, producing zero barrels and a .294 xwOBA. Cincinnati entered the morning without publicly settling its Game 1 starter. That uncertainty magnifies a 4.60 bullpen ERA and 461⅔ accumulated relief innings.
St. Louis suddenly owns several different species of damage. Jordan Walker is batting .284 with 24 homers and 88 RBI, backed by a 94.2-mph average exit velocity. His 51.5% hard-hit rate and 14.1% barrel rate confirm the thunder. Alec Burleson carries a .383 xwOBA, 48.7% hard-hit rate, and 11.6% barrel rate. Walker and Burleson each collected three hits, a homer, and four RBI in Sunday’s demolition. Joshua Báez then supplied pure baseball mischief, homering in each of his first three major-league at-bats. The Cardinals’ .240/.316/.382 team line remains modest, yet this lineup now possesses far more middle-order violence than its 129 homers suggest.
Cincinnati can answer with force, especially inside a park that rewards pulled airborne contact. Elly De La Cruz averages 94.4 mph off the bat with a 51.9% hard-hit rate and 15.3% barrels. His 28.5% strikeout rate leaves openings for Mathews’ elevated fastball and fading changeup. Sal Stewart owns 26 homers, 91 RBI, and a 14.9% barrel rate, giving Cincinnati another punisher of mistakes. The Reds have produced 161 homers despite batting .226 with a .306 on-base percentage. Spencer Steer’s absence removes a stabilizing right-handed plate appearance from the middle. Cincinnati’s damage profile remains explosive, though its rallies frequently require isolated extra-base blows rather than sustained traffic.
Cardinals vs. Reds pick, best bet
The wider game shape leans toward St. Louis as innings accumulate. Cincinnati recently pressed Tejay Antone, Sam Moll, Pierce Johnson, and Ron Marinaccio into meaningful workloads. Marinaccio alone threw 68 pitches across two days, an absurd burden entering a doubleheader. St. Louis owns a 4.30 relief ERA, with Riley O’Brien carrying a 3.08 ERA and 30 saves. The forecast calls for roughly 80 degrees, a light breeze toward the outfield, and rising rain chances later. Game 1 should receive the cleaner weather window. That allows Mathews to attack promptly while Cincinnati manages both precipitation and the evening game waiting behind it.
The over has obvious Great American appeal, although 9.5 asks Mathews and both bullpens to cooperate fully. St. Louis -1.5 at +130 introduces needless exposure to a one-run finish and uncertain late weather. The cleanest wager is Cardinals moneyline -115, playable through -120. St. Louis brings the stronger recent offense, the fresher leverage arm, and the only confirmed starter with real length. The failure mode is Mathews losing the zone while De La Cruz and Stewart punish hitter’s counts. His minor-league strikeout foundation and Cincinnati’s chase tendencies still make that outcome secondary.
Best bet: Cardinals ML -115, playable through -120.
Projected score: Cardinals 6, Reds 4.
Best bet: Cardinals (-115) at Reds
