The Crosstown Classic reaches Wrigley with more October voltage than either Chicago clubhouse expected six months ago. The White Sox stand 65-58 after completing their first Detroit sweep since 2022. Sunday’s 7-5 comeback extended their winning streak to three and their division lead to 5½ games. The Cubs remain 72-53 and hold the National League’s first wild card. Their weekend finished with consecutive losses and an 11-4 drubbing from St. Louis. That defeat completed their first lost series since early August. The White Sox lead the season series 2-1, having already demonstrated that the Cubs’ superior record guarantees little here. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Cubs vs. White Sox prediction, preview
Luis Castillo’s 4-9 record, 4.96 ERA, and 1.35 WHIP preserve every reason for skepticism. His 4.63 xERA and career-low 20.9% strikeout rate add legitimate ballast to that skepticism. Opponents have produced a .330 xwOBA, 90.1-mph average exit velocity, 41.5% hard-hit rate, and 9.6% barrels. His last six weeks tell a livelier story. Castillo posted a 1.99 ERA with 27 strikeouts across 31⅔ July innings. He then held Cincinnati scoreless for seven innings, allowing one hit while striking out 10. Imanaga carries a 3.74 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 130 strikeouts, and roughly six walks per 100 plate appearances. His .302 xwOBA, 88.3-mph exit velocity, and 35.5% hard-hit rate remain excellent.
Imanaga’s recent execution has slipped beneath those full-season numbers. Washington reached him for four runs, six hits, and three homers across 4⅔ innings. His two August starts have produced 14 hits, three homers, and nine earned baserunners across 9⅔ innings. The White Sox own the right machinery for another costly evening. Their 164 homers rank third in the American League, while their .730 OPS ranks ninth across baseball. Miguel Vargas and Munetaka Murakami each own 28 homers after both went deep Sunday. Vargas adds 72 RBI, a .384 xwOBA, 90.7-mph exit velocity, 46.4% hard-hit rate, and 14.5% barrels. Colson Montgomery also exceeds 25 homers, giving Chicago three central punishers against a fly-ball left-hander.
The Cubs can carve open Castillo if his fastball again leaks toward left-handed barrels. Pete Crow-Armstrong owns a .276 average, 28 homers, 75 RBI, and a .358 xwOBA. His 48.5% hard-hit rate and 12.0% barrels explain the power. He has four August homers and 12 RBI, although his 14-for-61 month includes considerable empty swing. Alex Bregman is batting .276 with five homers during August. His four-homer, .900-slugging week in Washington supplied the Cubs’ loudest recent stretch. Seiya Suzuki batted .333 with two homers and seven RBI last week. Michael Busch has supplied little extra-base damage lately, while Dansby Swanson’s oblique injury removes 18 homers and 66 RBI.
White Sox vs. Cubs pick, best bet
Swanson’s absence also costs the Cubs 12 Fielding Run Value at shortstop. Nico Hoerner must shift away from second base, weakening two defensive positions behind Imanaga’s contact. The White Sox bullpen owns a 3.74 ERA, narrowly better than Chicago’s 3.88. Its immediate availability carries more concern. Grant Taylor, Bryan Hudson, Huascar Brazoban, and Sean Newcomb have each worked twice across three days. Wrigley expects roughly 73 degrees, a 9% rain chance, and a five-mph crosswind. The weather offers neither lineup artificial help. The Cubs stayed home after their St. Louis series, while the White Sox made the short trip from Detroit.
Imanaga gives the Cubs the stronger median pitching projection, which explains their -161 price. That number grants too little respect to Chicago’s lefty-crushing power and Castillo’s six-week correction. White Sox +1.5 at -155 surrenders nearly every ounce of underdog value. Under eight also collides with six dangerous power bats and compromised relief availability. White Sox moneyline +150 remains the cleanest wager and stays playable to +135. The failure mode arrives when Castillo’s 90.1-mph contact profile returns and the tired bullpen inherits traffic. Imanaga’s recent homer leakage and Swanson’s defensive absence keep the upset live through nine innings.
Best bet: White Sox ML +150, playable to +135.
Projected score: White Sox 5, Cubs 4.
Best bet: White Sox (+150) at Cubs
