Red Sox at Pirates game delayed due to rain Sunday 8/16/26

UPDATE: The game is expected to resume at 6:05 p.m. ET.

Today’s matchup between the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates has been forced to go into a weather delay due to incoming rainstorms. The game officially hit a pause in the top of the seventh inning, with the Pirates holding a 7-3 lead.

These two teams split the opening two matchups in this series. Pittsburgh produced an 8-4 win in the series opener, before Boston got back on top with a 4-0 win yesterday.

Patrick Sandoval got the start for the Red Sox tonight and struggled greatly in his outing. Sandoval was chased from the matchup after allowing nine hits and seven earned runs across just four innings pitched. Raymond Burgos entered the game after this and threw two hitless innings to settle things down, but the Red Sox have been unable to dig out of this hole. Boston put three runs on the board in the top of the fifth inning to cut the deficit, but there is still plenty of work to be done if it is to come out victorious once the storms settle.

The Red Sox have been one of the hottest teams in baseball as of late and have gained some respect in the futures market as a result. Boston would enter the postseason through the Wild Card if the season ended today and is tied for the third-best odds of winning the American League at +600 on DraftKings Sportsbook, as well as the seventh-best odds of winning the World Series at +1400.

In contrast, the Pirates have slipped out of the postseason picture after an encouraging start to the year. Pittsburgh has slipped to last place in the National League Central with a 60-65 record on the season, and it holds +30,000 odds of winning the division on DraftKings Sportsbook.

Stay tuned to DK Network for live updates on the rain delay as the two teams attempt to complete the series tonight.
