Bryan Woo will be on the mound for the Mariners tonight. Alvarez has faced off with him four times in his career and is two-for-four with a home run. Woo also has struggled greatly on the road this season, with a 1-8 record and a 6.22 ERA in these opportunities. He has not needed any help to produce this year, and this is a matchup that plays to the Astros’ star’s favor. Expect him to find a friendly pitch to hit and tally over 1.5 total bases tonight.
Hunter Brown Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-120)
Hunter Brown will take the ball for the Astros tonight, and hasn’t quite had the season he desired. This will mark just the 13th start of the year for the 27-year-old. He enters this game with a 3-2 record, a 3.68 ERA, a 1.272 WHIP, and has tallied 67 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched. Brown has tallied over 5.5 strikeouts in just five of his 12 starts this year, although he has eclipsed this in two of his past four.
The former All-Star has faced off with the Mariners team in 91 at-bats already in his career. He has tallied 26 strikeouts in these opportunities, including 15 of these coming against Julio Rodriguez and Randy Arozarena. Brown finished last season with 206 total strikeouts in 185.1 innings pitched, tallying over 5.5 strikeouts in 19 of his 31 starts. While he battled some shoulder issues this season, the Astros star is beginning to return to the All-Star-caliber pitcher he has proven to be. Facing a lineup he has familiarity with and success against, expect him to build off of this. Seattle is averaging 8.56 strikeouts per game this season and 10.3 across their past three outings. Julio Rodriguez to Record 2+ Total Bases (+140)
It has been an underwhelming season by Julio Rodriguez’s sky-high standards, but he is making a late push to get back to his statistical norm. On the season overall, the three-time All-Star is slashing .259/.325/.426 with a .751 OPS. However, across his past 14 games, he is posting slash lines of .314/.426/.510 with a .936 OPS, with 16 hits and three home runs across this stretch.
While Hunter Brown has tallied eight strikeouts across the 24 at-bats with Rodriguez, the Mariners star also has eight hits in these opportunities, including one home run, two doubles, and five RBI. He enters this game on a four-game hitting streak, including two hits in yesterday’s matchup. Even if Brown is chased early, this is an Astros bullpen that is posting a collective ERA of 3.98 and has allowed the fifth-most home runs in the MLB with 70 on the year.
