It’s not hyperbolic to say that the Cardinals’ No. 3 prospect Joshua Baez is coming off the greatest major league debut for a hitter of all time. The young outfielder, 23, parked the first pitch he saw over the center field wall. Then he homered to left. Then he homered to right.
He’s the first player in MLB history to go deep in each of his first three at-bats.
While it remains to be seen how the right-handed slugger handles same-side pitching, he could be worth taking a flyer on to keep the momentum rolling, given Sunday’s extremely favorable pitching matchup. Baez will face Chicago’s Edward Cabrera, who has been shelved since June 23 with a hamstring injury. Before landing on the injured list, the erratic righty posted a 5.10 ERA (4.88 xERA) and a 1.40 WHIP over 14 starts (72.1 IP) for the Cubs. He ranks in the bottom four percent of pitchers in barrel rate (11.8 percent) and average exit velocity (91.3 mph).
Dylan Cease 9+ Strikeouts (-101)
Toronto’s Dylan Cease is in a tight race with Cam Schlittler for the American League Cy Young Award. Facing the Yankees on Sunday afternoon, he’ll be looking to put the league on notice with another dominant outing.
Cease enters with a 2.40 ERA — fourth-highest in MLB — across 22 starts (131.1 IP) for the Blue Jays. The veteran right-hander, 30, paces the AL in strikeouts (191), K/9 (13.09), and strikeout rate (36.1 percent). He’s recorded nine or more punchouts in 11 outings this year, racking up double-digit K’s in three of his last seven.
While Cease struggled in his last start against New York — allowing five earned runs over five frames — he still managed to pile up nine strikeouts. The Yankees’ lineup will also enter the rematch with a much thinner offense, missing Aaron Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Giancarlo Stanton. Since June 25, the Bronx Bombers rank dead last in MLB in wRC+ (76), wOBA (.277), and, most notably, strikeout rate (27 percent).
Alex Bregman 2+ Hits + Runs + RBIs (+128)
After some early struggles in the Windy City, Alex Bregman is starting to justify his five-year, $175 million contract. Amid a monster second half in 2026, the star third baseman is hitting .294 while ranking just outside the league’s top ten in OPS (.929), wRC+ (159), wOBA (.405), and home runs (7).
Bregman, 32, picked up another hit on Saturday and appears well-positioned to stay hot in the series finale against the Cardinals. He’ll face former Red Sox teammate Hunter Dobbins, whose strong 3.40 ERA through nine appearances (six starts) this year is underscored by a middling 3.81 xERA and an alarming 40 percent hard-hit rate. Bregman has historically owned in this matchup, going 3-for-5 with a home run and a double against the young right-hander.
