Marlins vs. Reds NRFI (-130)
In this star-studded pitching matchup, it’ll be Sandy Alcantara toeing the slab for Miami. Through a league-high 163.2 innings (25 starts), he’s notched a 3.52 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 128 strikeouts (7.0 K/9). He comes into tonight’s game having tossed 20.0 straight scoreless innings. In addition, the former NL Cy Young winner has notched a nine-game NRFI streak. There’s no reason to think he’ll hit a speed bump during Friday’s contest. Cincinnati ranks 26th in runs scored (496) and 30th in batting average (.227). In addition, the Reds own the tenth-worst YRFI rate in baseball (27.50%).
As for the home team, ace Chase Burns will get the nod this evening. It’s been a terrific campaign from the right-hander, among the best arms in the league. Over 124.0 innings of work (22 starts), he’s posted a 2.61 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 143 strikeouts (10.4 K/9). The 23-year-old has been nearly unhittable when pitching at home (2.20 ERA). The Marlins aren’t the most intimidating offense, ranking 18th in runs scored (535). They also own a below-average 29.51% YRFI rate. In comparison, Burns has an 87% NRFI rate. That bodes well for the right-hander’s chances at a clean first inning tonight.
Red Sox vs. Pirates NRFI (-130)
Jake Bennett has been an underrated gem for the Red Sox this season. Since joining Boston in May, the rookie has been a valuable member of this rotation. Over 13 starts (76.2 IP), he’s delivered a 3.17 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 55 strikeouts (6.5 K/9). Even more impressive, he has yet to allow a first inning run in the big leagues. On paper, Friday’s matchup could present a challenge for the 25-year-old. The Pirates rank third in the majors with 5.02 runs per game. However, the Buccos have looked off at the plate in recent weeks. Pittsburgh has scored 54 runs over its last 15 games, sixth-worst in baseball during that stretch.
As for the Pirates, Bubba Chandler will be making his 23rd start of the season. It’s been a mixed bag for the right-hander, who has struggled when it comes to command (4.8 BB/9). During 116.1 innings pitched, he’s posted a 4.26 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 103 strikeouts (8.0 K/9). However, he comes into Friday having allowed a first inning run once over his last ten games. It also helps that the Red Sox average the sixth-fewest walks per game (3.16) on offense. As a result, they might not be able to exploit Chandler’s lackluster control. Boston also has the fourth-highest YRFI rate on the road this season (21.31%).
