Any time Zack Wheeler is on the mound, bettors should take notice. Philadelphia’s ace has been near-unhittable since making his season debut in late April. Over 110.1 innings pitched (19 starts), the veteran has notched a 2.69 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 132 strikeouts (10.8 K/9). After a rare letdown start vs. Toronto, the three-time All-Star will be eager to get back on track this afternoon. Wheeler owns a stellar 84.2% NRFI rate this season. Today’s opponents, the Cardinals, have posted the sixth-lowest OPS (.696) against right-handed pitching.
As for the Cardinals, Kyle Leahy will get the nod in this one. He’s not at Wheeler’s level, but the 29-year-old is a solid arm in his own right. Through 112.1 innings (22 starts), he’s recorded a 3.45 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 99 strikeouts (7.9 K/9). He enters Wednesday’s matchup on an eight-game NRFI streak. The Phillies have struggled offensively outside of Citizens Bank Park. They’ve scored the fourth-fewest runs on the road (3.97) this season. To boot, Philadelphia is tied for the league’s ninth-lowest YRFI rate on the road (23.73%).
Mariners vs. Yankees NRFI (-120)
Few would-be contenders are in more desperate need of a win tonight than Seattle. Fortunately for the Mariners, Bryce Miller is more than capable of tossing a gem. It’s been a terrific, albeit injury-shortened, campaign for the 27-year-old. During 79.0 innings pitched (13 starts), he’s accounted for a 3.08 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 79 strikeouts (9.0 K/9). Miller is a first inning maestro, delivering an 81% NRFI rate over his four-year career. New York’s offense has been uninspiring at best with Aaron Judge (ribs) sidelined. Since July 1st, the Yankees have scored the third-fewest runs (120) in baseball.
Toeing the slab for the Pinstripes this evening is Will Warren. Despite his reputation as a back-end arm, the righty has been a nice piece for manager Aaron Boone. Over 114.0 innings (22 starts), he’s put up a 4.18 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 114 strikeouts (9.0 K/9). It’s important to note that he’s been even better at Yankee Stadium (3.88 ERA). The Mariners, baseball’s lowest scoring offense, don’t provide much of a challenge. Seattle also has the fourth-lowest YRFI rate on the road this season (20.69%). Warren has held the M’s to two runs combined over two career meetings. A similar performance wouldn’t come as a shock tonight.
