Tough break for Jose Altuve and the Houston Astros tonight. In the top of the first inning, Altuve took a pitch right off his left foot from Giants starting pitcher Carson Whisenhunt. After playing the field in the bottom of the first, Altuve was removed for defensive substitute Nick Allen in the bottom of the second.
Altuve, 36, has a .690 OPS with 13 home runs and 35 RBI for the Astros this season. His best baseball is surely behind him, but he remains a useful lineup fixture for an Astros lineup light on depth. If he’s forced to miss time, Nick Allen figures to take most of his time at second base. Though not a great hitter, Allen has a superb glove all around the infield.
Since Altuve exited after his first at-bat, he will be eligible for the DraftKings Early Exit program.
