Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago Cubs prediction, pick for MLB on Friday 8/07/26

Kevin Gausman’s Cubs debut arrives with Chicago playing its sharpest baseball of the month. The Cubs have won four straight and four of five, including a three-game sweep of the Dodgers. Thursday required a different kind of victory. Alex Bregman erased a two-run ninth-inning deficit before Pete Crow-Armstrong created the winning run in the 11th. Chicago is 67-49 and begins this six-game trip carrying genuine late-game confidence. The Royals sit 48-68 after Thursday’s bullpen collapse ended a five-game home winning streak. They are 4-6 with a .231 average across their last 10 games. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Royals vs. Cubs prediction, preview

Gausman reached Chicago with a 5-10 record, 4.38 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 127 strikeouts across 127⅓ innings. His recent line remains uneven, although the latest two starts offered progress. Gausman allowed four earned runs across 11⅔ innings against Boston and St. Louis, striking out 10 with only two walks. His last five starts produced a 5.13 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, 27 strikeouts, and 12 walks across 26⅓ innings. Tampa Bay tagged him for nine hits and four runs across 3⅓ innings. He responded by holding St. Louis to one run despite allowing nine hits. The results have lacked consistency, but his command clearly stabilized during the last two outings.

The underlying profile remains stronger than Gausman’s surface ERA. He has allowed an 88.4 mph average exit velocity, 38.8% hard contact, 7.7% barrels, and a .307 xwOBA. His entire approach still runs through three pitches. Gausman throws a 93.9 mph four-seamer, an 84.0 mph splitter, and an 84.2 mph slider. The four-seamer reaches the zone 62% of the time, while the splitter lands there only 26%. Kansas City must separate those pitches early instead of chasing beneath the zone. Gausman’s declining velocity lowers his margin, but his contact suppression remains healthy.

The Royals possess one scorching threat and several more inconsistent ones. Bobby Witt Jr. collected three hits, one double, two runs, and a stolen base Thursday. He has batted .308/.379/.423 across seven games and .308/.364/.470 across 30. Jac Caglianone is also heating up, batting .286 with two homers, seven RBI, and only three strikeouts across seven games. Salvador Perez owns six homers and an .813 OPS across his last 30. Carter Jensen has gone cold, batting .115/.258/.308 across seven games and .175/.266/.360 across 30. Kansas City has enough top-order damage to test Gausman, but the lineup thins considerably after Witt, Caglianone, and Perez.

Daniel Lynch owns a brilliant 1.96 ERA and 0.94 WHIP, with only 35 strikeouts across 46 innings. His contact management deserves full credit. Opponents have averaged 87.8 mph with 35.8% hard contact and only 5.2% barrels. Lynch has also added velocity and sharper secondary pitches during his successful bullpen transition. His slider whiff rate climbed from 29.9% to 48.1%, while his changeup’s swing-and-miss rate increased by 80%. This assignment still changes everything. Lynch has not exceeded two innings this season, and Kansas City expects only two or three tonight.

Chicago enters that short assignment with several hitters gathering steam. Crow-Armstrong has batted .346/.452/.692 across seven games and .300 with three homers across 10. His speed decided Thursday in the 13th, two frames after his single opened the 11th inning. Bregman is batting .317 with 13 hits, eight runs, and four RBI across his last 10. His game-tying blast Thursday was his 12th homer. Seiya Suzuki owns three homers, 14 RBI, and 11 runs across 15 games. Nico Hoerner has batted .381 against right-handers during the last week. Michael Busch remains the softer point, hitting .209 with one homer across 10 games.

That recent form becomes more important after Lynch exits. Chicago has posted an .888 road OPS against left-handers during the last 30 days. Craig Counsell can also build the opening lineup around Bregman, Suzuki, Carson Kelly, Dansby Swanson, and Hoerner. Once Kansas City turns toward right-handed relief, Crow-Armstrong, Busch, and Ian Happ receive better platoon conditions. The Cubs should face at least six innings from a bullpen carrying a 5.40 season ERA. Royals relievers also own an 8.84 ERA across the last seven days. Aaron Bummer’s ERA reached 10.26 after Thursday’s blown lead.

Cubs vs. Royals pick, best bet

Kansas City can counter through Gausman’s recent traffic and Chicago’s travel schedule. The Cubs played 11 innings Thursday before beginning a road trip. Gausman allowed 32 hits and 12 walks across his last five starts, creating repeated baserunner pressure. Witt has the speed to disrupt his tempo, while Caglianone can punish a four-seamer left over the plate. The Royals have also won five of their last six home games. Their bullpen still makes every narrow advantage fragile. Kansas City blew a 3-1 eighth-inning lead Thursday after Michael Wacha supplied 5⅔ excellent innings.

Kauffman Stadium should sit near 85 degrees at first pitch, with no major weather interruption expected. The warm air raises the offensive ceiling, while the spacious gaps reward Chicago’s athleticism. Crow-Armstrong, Hoerner, and Suzuki can create extra bases without clearing the wall. The total already stands at 9.5, accounting for Lynch’s limited workload and Kansas City’s weak relief corps. Gausman’s underlying contact metrics and the Royals’ uneven lineup make the over harder to justify at that height.

Chicago’s moneyline at -165 accurately reflects the pitching depth and lineup advantage. The better wager remains Cubs -1.5 at -107. Lynch can pitch well and still leave during the third inning. Chicago then receives repeated opportunities against baseball’s 29th-ranked bullpen by ERA. The Royals need Gausman’s recent baserunner issues to continue, then must protect any lead with their weakest unit. Chicago’s four-game winning streak also contains several convincing offensive performances, including 10, five, and seven runs against the Dodgers.

Best bet: Cubs -1.5 (-107), playable through -115.

Projected score: Cubs 6, Royals 3.

Best bet: Cubs -1.5 (-105) at Royals
