Boston Red Sox vs. Athletics prediction, pick for MLB on Friday 8/07/26

Boston opens this three-game Fenway series at 63-51 after one of its season’s defining victories. The Red Sox erased five deficits Thursday, won 12-11 in 13 innings, and extended their winning streak to eight. They have won 31 of 36, while The Athletics arrive 45-70 after eight consecutive losses. The visitors have gone 7-32 since June 19 and dropped a franchise-record 12 straight series. Payton Tolle and Jack Perkins meet again 11 days after Boston’s 4-2 victory in the previous matchup. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Red Sox vs. Athletics prediction, preview

Perkins owns a 2-7 record, 6.72 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 89 strikeouts across 73⅔ innings. His 95.9 mph four-seamer, sweeper, and changeup compose more than 84% of his arsenal. The underlying contact looks considerably better than his ERA, with a .310 xwOBA, 37.6% hard-hit rate, and 8.3% barrels. However, his .425 wOBA on contact and 16.2-degree launch angle leave dangerous airborne contact available at Fenway. Tolle carries a 6-6 record, 3.30 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts across 101 innings. His fastball-heavy attack has held opponents to an 87.9 mph exit velocity, 35.5% hard hits, and a .269 xwOBA. Boston owns baseball’s second-best bullpen ERA at 3.34, while The Athletics’ relief group remains among the league’s weakest.

Boston’s offense has become ferocious during this winning streak, producing crooked innings against starters and relievers alike. Wilyer Abreu homered four times across three games before delivering Thursday’s game-tying ninth-inning single. Willson Contreras leads Boston with a .288 average, 23 homers, and 70 RBI, although illness threatens his availability. Caleb Durbin enters batting .378 across his last 10 games, with 14 hits, seven RBI, and nine runs. He added three hits and Thursday’s walk-off single, while Ceddanne Rafaela, Masataka Yoshida, and Connor Wong each collected multiple hits. The Athletics counter without Nick Kurtz, Shea Langeliers, and Zack Gelof, removing critical power and right-handed depth against Tolle. Tyler Soderstrom has batted .231/.310/.346 across his last seven, leaving Jacob Wilson and Lawrence Butler with greater responsibility.

The strongest under argument begins with the previous meeting. Perkins carried a one-hitter into the sixth and allowed two runs across 5⅔ innings. Tolle answered with two runs, five hits, seven strikeouts, and one walk across 5⅓. His season-long contact suppression remains excellent, and The Athletics’ injury-damaged lineup could struggle through five innings again. Tolle’s recent form creates the opening for Oakland’s contribution, however. His three post-break starts produced a 4.24 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, four homers, and a .319/.365/.551 opponent line. Boston also needs length after using eight pitchers Thursday. Once both starters leave, one bullpen lacks quality and the other lacks rest.

Athletics vs. Red Sox pick, best bet

Fenway should remain hot and hitter-friendly after afternoon temperatures climbed near 90 degrees. The latest forecast projects approximately 88 degrees, partial clouds, 59% humidity, and a nine-mph northerly breeze. Perkins’ elevated contact can become wall doubles even when fly balls fail to leave the park. Boston’s physical condition presents the largest concern after Thursday’s four-hour, 23-minute marathon. Erik Miller, Greg Weissert, Brayan Bello, Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, and other leverage arms all worked during the victory. The Athletics travel from Cincinnati without changing time zones, although another late loss extended their emotional and competitive collapse. Official lineups remain unposted, with Contreras’ illness and possible Boston rest decisions still worth monitoring.

Boston deserves overwhelming favoritism, but the -261 moneyline asks too much from a severely taxed pitching staff. The -1.5 price at -131 also depends upon exhausted relievers protecting a multi-run advantage. Over 8.5 offers the broader winning route at nearly even money. Boston can reach six runs against Perkins and an Oakland bullpen allowing sustained walks, traffic, and home runs. The Athletics can add three through Tolle’s recent contact regression and Boston’s compromised late-inning chain. A quiet opening does not kill the wager because both relief paths invite late scoring. I would avoid over nine at significant juice, but 8.5 remains a strong number.

Best bet: Over 8.5 runs (-106), playable through -115.

Projected score: Red Sox 6, Athletics 3.

Best bet: Red Sox vs. Athletics o8.5 total runs scored (-105)
