Despite trading away Tarik Skubal, the Tigers (55-59) are in the thick of a wide-open American League playoff race. It’s a similar story for the Mariners (56-59), who have struggled to recapture the magic from 2025. A rubber match on Thursday will give one of these fringe contenders a boost going forward. Which side has the edge this afternoon in Seattle?
The Mariners are favorites (-124) over the Tigers, with the over/under set at eight runs. Below, I’ve laid out my preview, prediction, and best bet for Thursday’s showdown between Detroit and Seattle on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Tigers vs. Mariners pick, best bet today
- Mariners ML (-124): Miller, despite a few recent hiccups, has been one of the American League’s premier arms this season. As for Valdez, he’s been a mediocre pitcher throughout his brief tenure in Detroit. Keeping that in mind, I’d rather back the Mariners as slight home favorites.
Tigers vs. Mariners prediction, preview
Seattle will face off against a familiar foe today in Framber Valdez. The former Astros hurler has had an up and down debut season in Detroit. Through 120.1 innings of work (22 starts), he’s notched a 4.41 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 98 strikeouts (7.3 K/9). Those aren’t terrible numbers, but it’s beneath what we’ve come to expect from the two-time All-Star. A look under the hood doesn’t inspire much confidence either. Valdez ranks inside the 35th percentile or worse in xBA (.253), whiff rate (21.0%), strikeout rate (18.4%) and hard-hit rate (43.4%). The veteran is still generating ground balls at an elite clip, but that’s his only exceptional trait at the moment.
If there was ever an opponent that could bring the best out of Valdez, it’s the Mariners. The southpaw owns a career 3.43 ERA over 18 career meetings with this squad. That includes a five-inning, one-run gem in Detroit back on June 5th. Offense has been hard to come by at T-Mobile Park this season, as is usually the case. Seattle is 28th in runs per game (3.98), tied for 30th in batting average (.230) and 27th in OPS (.688). The one thing this group does somewhat well, hit homers, is mitigated by a crippling lack of bat to ball skills. Former All-Stars such as Cal Raleigh (70 wRC+) and Josh Naylor (99 wRC+) have looked like different hitters in 2026.
Seattle’s saving grace comes from one of the sport’s best starting rotations. That includes tonight’s starter, Bryce Miller. Despite missing time to start the year, it’s been a stellar campaign from the right-hander. Over 74.0 innings (12 starts), he’s accounted for a 2.80 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 74 strikeouts (9.0 K/9). The 27-year-old has hit a speed bump in recent weeks, recording a 5.48 ERA over his last four outings. With that being said, a few disappointing starts are likely a blip on the radar. Miller places inside the 90th percentile or better in xERA (2.67), chase rate (36.0%), walk rate (4.6%) and hard-hit rate (31.6%). To boot, the veteran owns a sparkling 1.34 ERA over six appearances at home.
Bouncing back on Thursday is within the realm of possibility for Miller, but it could prove difficult. The Tigers come into this contest with momentum, leading the league in runs over their last ten contests (76). The next-closest club, Boston, has only scored 60 times during that stretch. Since July 1st, Detroit is third in baseball with a .809 OPS against right-handed pitching (). On paper, this all suggests a difficult spot for Seattle’s starter. However, it’s impossible to ignore Miller’s history of success in this spot. Over 25.0 innings (four starts) against the Tigers, he has yet to allow an earned run. Most recently, he tossed a six-inning, one-hit masterpiece in Motown on June 6th.
Best Bet: Mariners ML (-124)
A few bad starts doesn’t erase what’s been a phenomenal season from Miller. With respect to Detroit’s recent hot streak, Seattle’s starter has dominated this matchup in the past. As for Valdez, he’s been erratic at best throughout 2026. At home, I’ll back a Mariners squad with an edge on the mound this afternoon.
