Every four years, the World Cup presents an opportunity for young stars to break out and become global household names, and the 2026 World Cup was no exception.
During the tournament, 19-year-old winger Yan Diomandé rose from relative obscurity to become a focal piece of the transfer rumor mill by helping Ivory Coast advance out of the group stage for the first time in its history. Throughout the World Cup, Diomandé attracted interest from back-to-back defending Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, as well as 2024-25 Premier League winners Liverpool.
After a month at the center of the rumor mill, Diomandé’s transfer saga appears to have reached a conclusion. On Wednesday morning, The Athletic’s Mario Cortegana reported that RB Leipzig had agreed to terms with Real Madrid over the winger’s services. Los Blancos will reportedly pay a €125 million fee to the German club, in addition to €15 million worth of potential add-ons. The fee is a record for an outgoing Leipzig player, surpassing Joško Gvardiol’s €90 million fee in 2023.
The sides were rumored to have initially reached a deal on July 26, but Die Roten Bullen denied the speculation, and Diomandé reported to training on Wednesday. However, per Fabrizio Romano, who initially announced the deal, Diomandé is expected to travel to Madrid to undergo a physical with his new team.
Diomandé started 28 of Leipzig’s 34 games in the Bundesliga in 2025-26, registering 12 goals and tying for the team lead with eight assists as Die Roten Bullen finished third, their best finish since 2022-23. Then, Diomandé assisted the opening goal in the Elephants’ 2-0 win over Curaçao in the group stage match that ultimately clinched their qualification for the knockouts, and he ranked fourth in distance on progressive carries and ninth in chances created per 90 minutes among all players at the World Cup.
Diomandé joins a Real Madrid team in need of some wing depth. Los Blancos have finished second in La Liga in each of the past two seasons and have suffered elimination in the Champions League quarterfinals in both, and the right wing was a clear position of weakness, especially after Rodrygo tore his ACL. Though Diomandé primarily played on the left during the World Cup, he has plenty of experience playing on the right for Die Roten Bullen. Unless Madrid manages to complete a transfer for Michael Olise — a player Bayern Münich has vehemently denied is up for sale — Diomandé should be a guaranteed starter on the right wing. He could also slide over to the left if Vinícius Júnior ultimately chooses Arsenal, which has been pursuing him heavily.
It’s been an active summer for Real Madrid, which has already secured the services of Marc Cucurella and is expected to close in on a deal for World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri. Los Blancos are second-favorites to win La Liga (+120) at DraftKings Sportsbook and have the sixth-shortest odds to win the Champions League.
