Arizona Diamondbacks vs. San Diego Padres prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 8/05/26

San Diego reaches Wednesday night after winning nine of 11 and answering Monday’s loss with a 9-4 rout. The Padres collected 16 hits Tuesday, including three apiece from Manny Machado, Jackson Merrill, and Jake Cronenworth. Arizona had won five of six before that defeat, keeping this four-game series central to the wild-card race. Casey Mize makes his Padres debut against Mitch Bratt, giving San Diego a major rotation advantage. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the San Diego Padres.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Diamondbacks vs. Padres prediction, preview

Mize arrives with a 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, 85 strikeouts, and only 19 walks across 86⅔ innings. His 3.07 xERA, .273 xwOBA, 36% hard-hit rate, and 6.4% barrel rate support the surface results. Mize throws four-seamers 34.4%, sliders 26.3%, and splitters 23.7%, creating distinct answers against both handedness groups. Lefties have hit .194/.234/.272 against him, while his splitter owns a 34.5% whiff rate and .244 xwOBA. His last seven starts produced a 3.23 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 36 strikeouts, and seven walks across 39 innings.

Bratt enters with a 5.23 ERA, 1.84 WHIP, 12 strikeouts, and 15 walks through 20⅔ innings. His 12.2% strikeout rate and 15.3% walk rate leave almost no protection once traffic reaches the bases. Bratt’s four-seamer averages around 92 mph and has allowed a .345 average, .586 slugging percentage, and 53.8% hard contact. His slurve can finish hitters, but poor fastball command prevents him from reaching favorable counts consistently. Bratt has averaged barely four innings per start, creating another extended assignment for Arizona’s bullpen.

San Diego’s recent form makes that traffic especially dangerous. Merrill has hit .375/.390/.643 across 15 games, with four homers, 12 RBI, and 10 runs. His 30-game line includes a .319 average, .552 slugging percentage, eight homers, and 23 RBI. Machado entered this matchup as San Diego’s leading power source, then drove in four runs during Tuesday’s three-hit performance. Fernando Tatis Jr. has cooled, but Bratt’s walk problems offer another route before Machado and Merrill reach the plate. Xander Bogaerts also received negative X-rays after Tuesday’s foot injury and should remain available.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks pick, best bet

Arizona’s clearest counter comes through Nolan Arenado and James McCann. Arenado has hit .262/.361/.544 across 30 games, with eight homers and 20 RBI. McCann carries a nine-game hitting streak and has driven in a run during eight consecutive games. Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte have supplied far less support, combining for an 0-for-8 night Tuesday. Mize’s command makes those slumps more damaging because Arizona cannot depend on walks to build innings. San Diego also preserved Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon, and Jeremiah Estrada behind him.

The closed Chase Field roof removes Phoenix heat and wind from the projection. That makes the full-game over less attractive than San Diego’s individual scoring markets. Mize’s long layoff creates some workload uncertainty, but San Diego can remove him early without exposing a weak bullpen bridge. Bratt’s walks, vulnerable fastball, and likely short outing give the Padres several paths toward five or six runs. The moneyline captures San Diego’s advantages without requiring Arizona’s offense to contribute.

Best bet: Padres moneyline -119, playable through -130.

Projected score: Padres 6, Diamondbacks 3.

Best bet: Padres (-120) at Diamondbacks
