We head to Sedgefield Country Club (par 70, 7,131 yards, Bermuda greens) in Greensboro, North Carolina, for the Wyndham Championship, which is the final tournament before the FedExCup Playoffs. Sedgefield was designed by Donald Ross and has hosted the Wyndham Championship since 2008. Cameron Young won last year’s Wyndham Championship by six shots for his first PGA TOUR win. This week’s field consists of 145 players and there will be a top-65 and ties cut after the first two rounds. After the Wyndham Championship, only the top-70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Below, I have featured my two favorite bets for the Wyndham Championship on DraftKings Sportsbook.
Davis Thompson over Jordan Smith (-114)
Davis Thompson’s game has come alive recently, finishing T7th at the 3M Open and T8th at the Rocket Classic in his last two starts. Thompson gained strokes on approach at both events and has shot 68 or lower in all eight of his rounds during this stretch. Smith also competed at both the 3M Open and Rocket Classic, but he didn’t excel like Thompson, finishing T39th and T31st at the two events, respectively.
Thompson had a clear advantage at both TPC Twin Cities and Detroit Golf Club, as he has competed at both courses numerous times while Smith was a debutant at both tracks. This is the case again this week at Sedgefield.
Smith has never competed at this Ross design before, while Thompson has finished T22nd, T12th and T11th at Sedgefield the last three years. With Thompson knowing this venue well and playing better than Smith, Thompson is the clear choice for this tournament matchup. It’s surprising he isn’t heavily favored.
Rico Hoey for a top-30 finish including ties (+210)
Rico Hoey has made 13 of his last 15 cuts and he has carded six top-30 finishes along the way. At last week’s Rocket Classic, which was played at another Ross design at Detroit Golf Club, Hoey finished T15th and gained strokes in every major category for the first time this season. Hoey posted 5-under 66s in the first and third rounds, and he finished in a tie for the most birdies of the tournament.
Seeing Hoey thrive at the Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club certainly is encouraging with Sedgefield up next. Hoey has finished T22nd and T67th in his two starts at this course, and he travels to Sedgefield as the No. 103 player in the world, which is the highest he has ever ranked heading into a Wyndham Championship by 10 spots.
Also, Hoey should be very motivated this week, as he sits 112 in the FedExCup standings. Only the top-70 will advance to next week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship and in order for Hoey to get inside the bubble, he needs to win or finish runner-up at the Wyndham Championship. While this is an unlikely outcome, Hoey finishing inside the top-30 is a very achievable feat and something I love taking a chance on at this +210 price.
