Lucky Episode 5 premieres Wednesday, August 5, on Apple TV. “Are We Bad People?” runs 41 minutes and begins the final three-episode stretch. Apple’s synopsis finds Lucky running again, making a lucrative discovery, and Agent Rand devising a new plan.
The title arrives after the series finally imposed a permanent cost upon its breathless criminal games. Cary is dead, Lucky has lost the future she chased, and Priscilla has lost her son. The missing money remains in circulation, but its promise of escape now feels increasingly hollow.
That turn should give Anya Taylor-Joy and Annette Bening richer material during the closing episodes. Taylor-Joy has carried the series through alertness, physical exhaustion, and constant invention. Bening now inherits a grief sharp enough to rearrange both every remaining allegiance and, most importantly, every line she before hadn’t dare cross.
Spoilers follow for Lucky Episode 4.
Lucky episode 5 preview
“Too Close to See It” reunited Lucky with Cary inside the beach house. He admitted stealing the casino money and abandoning her, though greed explained only part of the betrayal. Cary wanted freedom from Priscilla, while Lucky had secretly agreed to help Rand destroy her operation. Their confessions left the marriage wounded but intact. They chose each other again, took the money, and tried to escape together. The FBI arrived before that future could begin.
Lucky and Cary survived the raid, only to enter a chase involving federal agents and Priscilla’s men. Their vehicle crashed after a bullet destroyed one tire. Lucky awoke beside Cary and discovered he had been fatally shot. His final moments recovered the tenderness buried beneath their lies. Cary said he never regretted their life together. Lucky kissed him goodbye, then ran before the authorities arrived.
Cary’s death changes the entire chase. Lucky can still lie, steal, and disappear, but none of those talents can repair this loss. Episode 5 should force her to carry that grief through another round of survival. “Are We Bad People?” also turns the series toward its moral center. Lucky and Cary loved each other deeply. They still manipulated, endangered, and discarded nearly everyone around them.
Apple’s synopsis promises a lucrative discovery and a new plan from Rand. Both developments could give Lucky leverage, though money has repeatedly failed to buy freedom.
