San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks prediction, pick for Monday, 8/3/26

In the aftermath of Monday’s MLB trade deadline, the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks will kick off a pivotal four-game series at Chase Field.

The Padres (58–54, 3rd NL West) have won eight of their last nine games, sitting just one game behind Arizona. The Diamondbacks (59–53, 2nd NL West) have won four of their last five, now looking to firm up their position in the National League Wild Card race.

The clubs have split their first six matchups this year.

Looking at the pitching probables, we’ve got San Diego right-hander Michael King (6–7, 3.38 ERA) taking on Arizona righty Brandon Pfaadt (5–1, 4.00 ERA).

First pitch is at 9:40 p.m. ET. The Diamondbacks enter as slight -118 favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, while the Padres hold -102 odds on the moneyline. The game total is set at O/U nine runs.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks Preview

San Diego Padres

The Padres have been practically untouchable over the last couple of weeks. They’ve won eight of their last nine games — punctuated by three straight victories over the Giants — with their otherwise dormant offense leading MLB in wRC+, wOBA, and xwOBA since the All-Star break. Several players are surging at the plate, particularly Ty France, who’s hitting .397 with five home runs and 16 RBIs across 15 games in the second half.

San Diego’s pitching staff remains an enigma, which is why the club is only 10–6 since the break. In that span, the elite bullpen has been hampered by poor batted-ball luck, while the lackluster rotation has enjoyed the opposite. The Padres’ rotation ranks a middling 15th in ERA (3.73) compared to 26th in xERA (4.51) during this stretch.

Monday’s starter, Michael King, has certainly benefitted from his share of favorable luck this year. The veteran right-hander, 31, enters with a 3.38 ERA and a 4.58 xERA across 22 starts (125.1 IP) in 2026, limiting loud contact but struggling to generate much else. He carded an impressive 2.79 ERA across five July starts (29 IP), including six innings of one-run ball against the Diamondbacks. However, in his last start he allowed four earned runs over six frames against the lowly Rockies.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Much like the Padres, the Diamondbacks have gone 10–6 since the break behind a red-hot offense. With the lineup firing on all cylinders, Arizona ranks sixth in wRC+, sixth in wOBA, and third in xwOBA in the second half of 2026.

Their pitching staff, meanwhile, continues to get bailed out by a lockdown defense. The impact is most evident in the starting rotation; since the All-Star break, Arizona ranks 12th in ERA (3.67) compared to 27th in xERA (4.55).

That same coverage should be there Monday night to back up Brandon Pfaadt, who has been on quite the heater of late. He posted a dominant 1.88 ERA across five July starts, including five shutout frames against the Padres. Still, his career ERA of 4.98 across four MLB seasons suggests that success won’t hold for long. Earlier this year, he coughed up four earned runs over three innings against that same San Diego lineup on April 25.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks Pick, Best Bet

Monday’s series opener between the Padres and the Diamondbacks features two surging offenses and a pair of pitchers who are both outperforming their expected numbers. With the way these teams are swinging the bat, San Diego and Arizona should kickstart those respective regressions in the NL West grudge match at Chase Field.

Best Bet: Over 9 Runs (-105)
