Trade Deadline day gives this opener the weight of an October preview between two National League contenders. Los Angeles enters 69-43 after adding Tarik Skubal, Kris Bubic, and catcher Ben Rortvedt. Skubal debuts Tuesday, while Bubic remains on the 60-day injured list with left elbow soreness. Chicago answered by acquiring Kevin Gausman, adding needed depth behind an injury-thinned rotation. The Cubs sit 63-49 and hold the National League’s top Wild Card position. The Dodgers arrive after Boston swept them, while Chicago has allowed three runs or fewer in five straight games. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Cubs vs. Dodgers prediction, preview
Justin Wrobleski brings an 11-2 record, 2.88 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts into Wrigley. His 4.30 xERA, .320 xwOBA, 89.8 mph contact, and 43.0% hard-hit rate reveal a shakier foundation. Opponents own a .222 average against a .267 xBA and a .348 slugging percentage against a .432 xSLG. His four-seamer and slider comprise 78.7% of his arsenal, yet neither reaches a 24% whiff rate. The fastball carries a .386 xSLG, while the slider reaches .449 with 49.5% hard contact. Seattle punished those elevated mistakes for four home runs during Wrobleski’s latest start.
Matthew Boyd owns a 3.41 ERA, 3.55 FIP, 1.20 WHIP, and a 1.67 ERA across five starts. His 88.6 mph contact and 39.5% hard-hit rate give Chicago the steadier starting profile. Boyd changes four velocity bands, using a 92.7 mph four-seamer and a changeup nearly 14 mph slower. He most recently held St. Louis scoreless across seven innings, allowing four hits with five strikeouts. Los Angeles still carries serious danger through Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, Mookie Betts, and Teoscar Hernández. Ohtani owns 93.8 mph contact, 54.2% hard hits, and 16.7% barrels, while Freeman went 11-for-24 last week. Boyd’s 9.5% barrel rate keeps the Dodgers firmly live against his recent form.
Chicago’s matchup advantage begins with a .781 OPS against left-handed pitching. Alex Bregman hit .429 last week, while Nico Hoerner batted .423 with two home runs. Seiya Suzuki supplies the steadier power, carrying 39.9% hard hits, 9.9% barrels, and a .333 xwOBA. Pete Crow-Armstrong adds 24 home runs, 26 steals, and a 49.0% hard-hit rate. Wrobleski already blanked Chicago for six April innings, although four walks required 109 pitches. The Cubs scored only six runs against New York, so this wager depends upon matchup fit and patience. Ian Happ, Dansby Swanson, and Michael Busch must improve after difficult weeks.
Dodgers vs. Cubs pick, best bet
Chicago also owns the cleaner schedule position after remaining home, while Los Angeles traveled east following Sunday’s sweep. The Dodgers required heavy bullpen work during the Boston series and remain without Blake Treinen and Will Klein. Chicago lacks Daniel Palencia, though Boyd offers a better chance to protect the bullpen’s thinner middle innings. The Cubs lead Fielding Bible’s team Defensive Runs Saved leaderboard, strengthening every contact-management edge behind Boyd. Wrigley should sit near 76 degrees, with no rain and an eight-mph WSW wind. That breeze appears neutral or slightly inward, reducing marginal carry without eliminating true home-run contact.
The Dodgers deserve respect, but -126 prices their reputation more aggressively than Monday’s starting matchup. Boyd owns the better recent form, while Chicago’s lefty split directly tests Wrobleski’s two primary pitches. The Cubs also bring superior defense, cleaner travel, and plus money into a game with narrow talent separation. The total carries less appeal because both starters allow meaningful barrel risk beneath strong surface results. Chicago’s full-game moneyline captures Wrobleski’s regression without requiring Boyd to dominate seven innings. Cubs +104 offers the cleanest balance of pitching form, matchup fit, and price. The wager remains playable through -105, with a one-run game representing the likeliest shape.
Best bet: Cubs moneyline (+104), playable through -105
Projected score: Cubs 4, Dodgers 3
Best bet: Cubs (+105) vs. Dodgers
