Seattle’s season is beginning to acquire a queasy texture as we round into August. The Mariners are 53-56, third in the American League West and 2-6 since July 21. They have enough rotation quality to justify buying, yet their uneven offense and -27 fielding run value keep arguing the other side. Los Angeles inhabits a different sport. The Dodgers are 68-40, own baseball’s best record and have gone 34-20 during each of the season’s first two 54-game segments. Seattle won Tuesday’s opener 7-6 behind Dominic Canzone’s two homers, then produced one hit through seven innings Wednesday before losing 4-2. Andy Pages homered, doubled and singled for Los Angeles. Shohei Ohtani added another RBI double. The rubber game therefore arrives with a compelling imbalance: Seattle urgently needs it, while the Dodgers keep winning despite injuries, lineup underperformance and the gravitational distraction of Tarik Skubal rumors. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Dodgers vs. Mariners prediction, preview
Bryan Woo’s headline numbers undersell some excellent process and conceal one enormous geographic fissure. He is 7-7 with a 4.37 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 114 strikeouts across 115.1 innings. His 24.0% strikeout rate, 5.1% walk rate and approximately 3.52 FIP describe a much better pitcher. Opponents have managed a .287 wOBA, while his 6.6% barrel rate remains strong despite a 43.1% hard-hit rate. Woo’s fastball averages 95.8 mph, and his four-seamer-slider combination accounts for roughly three-quarters of his usage. Unfortunately, he is 1-7 with a 6.52 ERA in 11 road starts, compared with 6-0 and a 2.20 ERA in Seattle. He allowed five runs, nine hits and two walks over five innings Saturday in Texas. Seattle also moved him forward to work on four days’ rest. Since June began, Woo is 2-4 with a 5.84 ERA across eight starts.
Roki Sasaki’s season has moved in the opposite direction. His 4-5 record, 4.71 ERA and 5.19 FIP across 93.2 innings reflect 16 starts of erratic command and excessive home-run damage. He has struck out 23.6% of hitters, walked 9.0% and allowed an 18.9% HR/FB rate. Statcast gives him a .321 xwOBA, considerably better than his .342 actual wOBA, although the 11.4% barrel rate remains ominous. His four-seamer has yielded a .409 xwOBA, while the splitter, forkball and slider sit at .264, .225 and .236. Los Angeles discovered Sasaki was exposing his grips and gave him an oversized yellow glove. The visual comedy has produced serious results. He has a 1.93 ERA with 19 strikeouts and four walks over his last 18.2 innings. Sasaki touched 101.8 mph against New York and then held the Mets to one run over seven innings, retiring his final nine hitters.
Seattle still carries enough right-handed damage to punish Sasaki’s fastball. Randy Arozarena is batting .284 with 13 homers and an .833 OPS. Canzone owns 18 homers and an .839 OPS after launching two balls at least 413 feet Tuesday. Julio Rodríguez has 16 homers, though his .255/.314/.421 line and recent concussion management reflect another incomplete season. Cal Raleigh has collapsed to .164 with 11 homers and a .576 OPS after an oblique injury. Josh Naylor is at .258 with eight homers and a .677 OPS, while Cole Young supplied two of Seattle’s five hits Wednesday. Los Angeles offers far more density. Ohtani owns a 143 wRC+ and .329 ISO. Freddie Freeman carries a 140 wRC+, Max Muncy sits at 133 and Tommy Edman at 153. Pages has a 115 wRC+ before accounting for Wednesday’s three-hit eruption. Dalton Rushing’s .217 ISO and 119 wRC+ extend the threat beyond the stars.
Mariners vs. Dodgers pick, best bet
The over case is hardly frivolous. Woo’s road split is extreme, and Los Angeles can construct six runs without any contribution from Seattle. Sasaki’s four-seamer remains susceptible to airborne contact, exactly where Canzone, Arozarena and Rodríguez can hurt him. The series opener reached 13 runs, while Tuesday’s Dodgers bullpen allowed five homers. Ohtani is managing knee inflammation and right-biceps discomfort, yet he still has 23 homers and remains dangerous as the designated hitter. The under receives stronger support from Wednesday’s game and Seattle’s broader offensive mediocrity. The Mariners own a 100 wRC+, with Raleigh and Naylor supplying far less production than their reputations imply. Sasaki’s larger glove has closed the most obvious tell in his delivery. Woo’s 19-point strikeout-minus-walk rate gives him a credible chance to outperform his road ERA, even against the league’s deepest lineup.
elief quality adds another layer of protection. Seattle’s bullpen ranks among baseball’s best and has posted a 2.25 ERA over 20 innings during the last week. Andrés Muñoz, Matt Brash and Gabe Speier can shorten the game if Woo reaches the sixth. Los Angeles welcomed Edwin Díaz back Wednesday, and its pitching staff owns a 3.59 ERA with a .215 opponent average. Díaz looked rusty in the ninth, but the Dodgers can also deploy Tanner Scott and several power right-handers. The temperature should descend from the upper 80s toward the upper 70s after sunset, producing a warm setting without Sacramento-level carry. Dodgers -1.5 at +130 is attractive because of Woo’s road record, though it relies heavily on Sasaki’s three-start correction. Seattle +130 asks a struggling club to beat the best roster in baseball. A total of nine supplies push protection and allows Woo’s underlying metrics to matter.
Best bet: Under 9 runs (-118), playable through -120. Sasaki’s post-break velocity, concealed grips and 19-to-4 strikeout-to-walk line support a genuine adjustment. Woo’s 4.37 ERA conflicts with a 24.0% strikeout rate, 5.1% walk rate, 1.14 WHIP and 3.52 FIP. Seattle’s offense has scored four runs across the last 17 innings, while Raleigh, Rodríguez and Naylor remain below their customary standards. Both bullpens can convert a controlled first six innings into a quiet finish. The failure path is Woo’s road split proving fully descriptive, allowing Ohtani, Freeman and Muncy to generate most of the total themselves. Sasaki’s vulnerable four-seamer also leaves Seattle a multi-homer route. Nine remains high enough to absorb one crooked inning.
Projected score: Dodgers 5, Mariners 2.
Best bet: Dodgers vs. Mariners u9.0 total runs (-120)
