Boston arrives at the series finale with considerably more than a getaway-day chore in front of it. The Red Sox are 56-51, occupy an American League wild-card position, and have won 19 of 22. They have also won 11 of their last 12 road games. The Athletics have lost 25 of 32 and own a -127 run differential. Boston leads this series 2-1 despite scoring only 11 runs and repeatedly squandering traffic. Wednesday produced 13 stranded runners before Andruw Monasterio’s 428-foot homer decided a 4-2 game in the 10th. The Athletics went 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position and left 10 aboard. Both clubs played imperfect baseball, but Boston possessed enough pitching, athleticism, and bench depth to survive its mistakes. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the Boston Red Sox.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Athletics vs. Red Sox prediction, preview
Sonny Gray carries the more reliable run-prevention profile by several orders of magnitude. He is 12-2 with a 2.78 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts against 28 walks through 106.2 innings. His 3.69 FIP sees some regression, yet a .302 xwOBA, 37.5% hard-hit rate, and 7.3% barrel rate validate the broader performance. Gray had allowed four runs across 32.1 innings before Toronto battered him for five runs and 10 hits Saturday. That interruption followed five starts with a 1.11 ERA, so one poor afternoon should not erase the preceding command. The Athletics are using Mason Barnett as the first arm in a bullpen game. Barnett owns a 4.74 ERA, 4.72 FIP, and 1.38 WHIP over 24.2 innings. His 21.9% strikeout rate comes with a dangerous 12.4% walk rate. A 33.3% ground-ball rate and 1.82 HR/9 further reduce his margin. He has not started this season, and four innings represents his longest appearance.
Boston’s available lineup is diminished, although the remaining core still fits Barnett’s vulnerabilities. Willson Contreras is batting .285 with 22 homers, 66 RBI, and a .930 OPS. Wilyer Abreu has 15 homers and 52 RBI, while his left-handed swing receives the platoon advantage against Barnett’s four-seamer-slider foundation. Ceddanne Rafaela has reached .278/.320/.443 with 11 homers, 50 RBI, and 3.4 fWAR. His .331 wOBA exceeds a .280 xwOBA, but his elite center-field defense supports his overall value. Monasterio owns a 112 wRC+ and .200 ISO after Wednesday’s three-hit game. The Athletics’ healthy offense centers on Tyler Soderstrom, whose .246/.342/.468 line, 17 homers, and 122 wRC+ make him Gray’s primary problem. Lawrence Butler homered and doubled Wednesday. Jacob Wilson supplies contact, although his 92 wRC+ and .123 ISO have made that contact comparatively docile.
The strongest Athletics argument begins with Gray’s declining strikeout dominance and the favorable hitting conditions. His 21.6% strikeout rate is ordinary by his standards, while Soderstrom, Butler, and Jeff McNeil all bat left-handed. Temperatures will approach triple digits during the afternoon before cooling toward first pitch. Gray also owns a 4.58 career ERA in seven starts against his former organization. Boston has looked profligate in this series, scoring 11 runs while producing considerably more opportunity. The Athletics may be missing nearly every premium component of their intended lineup. Nick Kurtz, batting .260 with 21 homers and 69 RBI, is unlikely to play after an inconclusive forearm X-ray. Shea Langeliers is finished for the season after posting 23 homers and a 127 wRC+. Zack Gelof, Brent Rooker, and Joshua Kuroda-Grauer are also unavailable. Soderstrom consequently has little insulation around him.
Red Sox vs. Athletics pick, best bet
The late innings strengthen Boston’s two-run path. Aroldis Chapman and Greg Weissert worked Wednesday, but Garrett Whitlock owns a 2.03 ERA and 2.43 FIP over 40 innings. Tyron Guerrero has delivered a 2.16 ERA and 2.42 FIP. Gray’s capacity to reach the sixth would let Boston avoid the softer middle of its relief group. The Athletics already asked five relievers to cover the final 4.2 innings Wednesday, with José Suárez surrendering the decisive homer. They must now assemble at least five innings behind Barnett without several dependable position players or much late-game leverage depth. Boston’s -185 moneyline correctly identifies the winner while offering no usable price. Under 10 requires Barnett’s relay race to remain orderly in extreme heat. Over 10 asks the Athletics’ depleted lineup to contribute substantially against Gray. The run line isolates the clearest mismatch at a playable number.
Boston owns the superior starter, deeper available lineup, and sturdier collection of leverage arms. Barnett’s walk rate, fly-ball profile, and abbreviated workload create multiple routes to a crooked inning. The Red Sox can also manufacture separation through Jarren Duran’s speed, Rafaela’s baserunning, and the Athletics’ diminished defense. The primary failure path is Gray carrying Saturday’s command problems into this start. Boston’s recent tendency to strand runners supplies the secondary concern. Even accounting for both, the price underrates how severely injuries have compromised the Athletics’ comeback capacity.
Best bet: Red Sox -1.5 (+112), playable through -110.
Projected score: Red Sox 6, Athletics 2.
