Episode nine of Apple TV’s Cape Fear treated viewers to a Cady family reunion, of sorts. We’re finding out more and more about the past of not just Max, but Crystal and a few other supporting characters. As always on this twist-heavy miniseries, each answer opens up a handful of new questions.

Everything You Need to Know Before Cape Fear Episode 10
Let’s break down the latest plot developments during last week’s ninth episode, ‘The Scar’:
- Anna’s trip to Cape Fear leads her straight to the Cady family residence, and father Robert (Ron Perlman). He won’t tell Anna where Crystal is, even threatening her to stop asking questions about the woman’s whereabouts.
- As seen last week, Anna has begun to relapse. After a night of drinking at the local bar, her memory is a bit foggy. However, upon waking up in an unfamiliar bed, it starts to make more sense. Anna finds herself on Crystal’s houseboat, albeit still trying to recollect how she got there.
- Natalie is having a rough go of things in juvenile detention. She gets into a scrap with one of the girls inside lockup, only to be surprised when none other than Nevaeh gives her a kick to the gut.
- Crystal is friendly, at least by Cady standards. She offers Anna a beer, although the latter’s gun is being kept for safe keeping. The pictures on the boat that Ray stumbled upon in Episode Seven? They are Crystal’s, used as a form of blackmail to prevent Max from harming her.
- Tom is also imprisoned, which means he gets treated to a visit by none other than Max. He’s mainly here to taunt the Bowden patriarch, asking him how it feels to be kept behind bars. It’s a shocking role reversal, with the former prosecutor now helpless while his ex-convict rival roams free. Before leaving, Max tells Tom that one of his friends will send a “gift” to his cell that night.
- Nevaeh is brainwashed, giving Max a call to tell him that she’s making Natalie’s life a living hell. However, Cady’s master plan isn’t over just yet. He needs to find out where Anna is. Once that’s done, Max tells his own daughter to kill Natalie in order to make Anna feel the pain of losing a child. He promises that he’ll get Nevaeh out of jail once she finishes the job, giving her an inauthentic “I love you” before hanging up the phone.
- In a somewhat shocking reversal, Neveah goes against Max’s wishes and talks to Natalie. She comes clean about her father’s plotting, including the initial seduction of Zach and the new plan to kill Natalie.
- Anna finally goes through the mysterious photo collection, finding a picture of Crystal next to a boy. The toddler has a massive scar on its left side. When Anna asks Crystal, she gets a cold dismissal: “You really shouldn’t be here.”
- Tom finds a phone inside his cell, where he gets a call from (who else) Max. He tells Tom that he knows where his two kids are, and threatens that he can find them whenever he wishes. Cady gives his enemy a chance at ‘redemption’, but Tom loses his cool. He shouts into the phone that he’s going to find Max and kill him in a fit of rage.
- Max keeps making the rounds, visiting Noa at the SJLP. He tells her that Anna and Tom are trying to frame him, requesting the former’s location so that he can talk to her. Noa isn’t dumb; she refuses to play ball, telling Cady that she knows he’s responsible for killing Ray. To boot, she tells the ex-convict that she isn’t scared of Max. His response is to continue asking where Anna is, each question more menacing than the last. Then, Cady gets a phone call and leaves the SJLP office, with a smile on his face.
- Tom makes a phone call from prison, talking to Zach’s therapist. Apparently, the teen has managed to get past security and escape the complex. Tom makes a desperate call to Anna, telling her that he doesn’t know where their kids are.
- Natalie manages to escape juvi thanks to Noa. It comes as a major shock to Nevaeh, who begins screaming in shock at the loss of her confidant/lover.
- Anna has begun to question everything, wondering if Crystal was the one responsible for killing Max’s wife Melissa. Turns out her name is actually Lila, and she was abused by Max prior to his imprisonment. Turns out the boy with the scar is Lila’s son, which she had with her own brother Max. The boy is Luke, who we’ve seen for a few scenes around the dogs at the Cady residence. Max may not be a murderer, but his reprehensible behavior helped drive another to insanity. Anna forces Crystal into the basement of the boat, holding her at gunpoint.
- Anna calls Max, telling him that she knows he didn’t kill Melissa. However, she threatens him with all the newfound information that’s come to light. Anna sends Cady her address, and tells her they need to talk. Immediately after, Robert and the rest of the Cady clan (sans Max) come to the houseboat just in time. They turn the tables on Anna, forcing her into the basement. However, she manages to unearth an incriminating USB drive.
- Tom gives Max one last call, telling him not to harm his children. Cady’s only response? “Tom, set yourself free.”
- Anna, always resourceful, tricks Luke into opening the door before spraying him in the face. However, Crystal and Robert are there to prevent her from leaving. As she’s held at gunpoint, she tells Luke that Max is his father, putting him into a state of confusion. Crystal is panicking, and stabs Anna’s hand with a knife in anger. Still, that isn’t enough to convince Luke. He begins berating his mother before beating repeatedly on grandpa Robert. During the ruckus, Anna manages to sneak away towards the back of the boat, jumping into the water in a last-ditch effort to escape. As all this chaos is unfolding, Max pulls up to the houseboat.
