Is it a little strange that the Mariners and Rangers are finishing up their four-game series at 2:35 p.m. ET on a Monday? Definitely.
However, don’t like the matinee scheduling fool you. This is a massive tilt in the grand scheme of the AL West. Seattle might come into today’s action two games below .500, but that means it’s only 1.5 games back of Texas in the standings.

Mariners vs. Rangers prediction, preview
There aren’t really any poor options in the Mariners’ pitching staff, but for a must-win contest, the club will be glad it’s getting George Kirby’s turn in the rotation on Monday. For the season as a whole, Kirby’s surface numbers are slightly inflated thanks to a pesky .337 opponent BABIP. That said, across 19 starts and 116.0 innings, the RHP is in possession of a 3.25 FIP — the seventh-lowest qualified mark among AL starters. Kirby’s also currently in the best groove he’s been in all season long. After tossing six scoreless frames against the Reds last week, the 28-year-old sports a 1.73 ERA, a 2.65 FIP and a 6.3 K/BB ratio over his last four appearances. It feels like Kirby’s been a “dark horse” Cy Young candidate for three or four years now. At the moment, he’s truly pitching like one.
It’s a bit of a different story for Kumar Rocker, who will toe the rubber for the Rangers this afternoon. The former third-overall pick has flashed his raw talent on occasion in 2026, yet it’s consistency that’s been Rocker’s biggest hurdle. Look no further than his past two starts. Last Tuesday versus the White Sox, Rocker had arguably the best outing of his young career, pitching six scoreless innings and allowing just a single hit in the process. However, back on July 11, Rocker surrendered three long balls in a terrible showing against the Astros, eventually finishing the contest with a season-high seven earned runs conceded. At the end of the day, Rocker has a 30th percentile xERA (4.60) and a 24th percentile opponent expected batting average (.261). He doesn’t generate strikeouts or whiffs at even a league-average level, and his walk rate is also subpar. Obviously, he’s still only 26-years-old, but right now, it’s hard to see anything more than a back-end rotation piece.
Good teams can take advantage of Rocker’s mistakes. The question now becomes: Are the Mariners a good team? It’s been a disappointing offensive campaign for Seattle to say the least. An injury to prized offseason acquisition Brendan Donovan (groin) isn’t helping matters, but across the board, the club’s main bats simply aren’t getting the job done, whether that’s Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez or Josh Naylor. In the month of July, the Mariners rank dead-last in batting average (.219), 28th in wOBA (.285), 27th in ISO (.128) and 26th in wRC+ (87). You truly have to remind yourself that this is basically the same lineup that was a game away from the World Series last October.

The Rangers have been swinging the lumber well lately, but I think Kirby will be able to keep Texas mostly at bay. On the other side, I simply can not trust the Mariners bats. Rocker’s on the heels of the best start of his season. Look for him to build on that momentum.
