The White Sox awakened Sunday with 12 runs and five homers. Munetaka Murakami drove in six, Miguel Vargas supplied another homer, and Chase Meidroth continued his summer surge. New York counters with 151 homers and a pitching staff carrying a 3.41 ERA. This opener pairs playoff urgency with two teams arriving from dramatically different offensive Sundays. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the New York Yankees.

White Sox vs. Yankees prediction, preview
Max Fried returned from an elbow bone bruise with five scoreless innings, seven strikeouts, one walk, and one hit. His fastball reached 98.3 mph, immediately removing the largest concern surrounding his health. Fried owns a 2.97 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 57 strikeouts, 20 walks, and one homer allowed across 66⅔ innings. His contact profile remains exquisite: 86.0 mph average exit velocity, 30.5% hard hits, 1.7% barrels, and a 49% ground-ball rate. Fried can change shape almost every pitch. His cutter, sinker, four-seamer, curveball, changeup, and sweeper all carry meaningful usage.
Noah Schultz owns the opposite run shape. He has allowed 54 hits, 29 walks, nine homers, and 38 earned runs across 56⅔ innings. That becomes a 6.04 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 19.4% strikeout rate, and 11.5% walk rate. His 6.03 expected ERA removes any argument that sequencing created the damage. Opponents have generated a .371 expected wOBA, .274 expected average, .471 expected slugging, 89.1 mph exit velocity, and 10.7% barrels. Texas collected 11 hits and five runs against him in 3⅔ innings. His cutter and sweeper can miss bats, but neither consistently protects his fastball.
Ben Rice has become indispensable during New York’s injury crisis. His 31 homers, .586 slugging percentage, and recent homer-double performance give Schultz an immediate left-on-left problem. Rice’s willingness to drive pitches toward left-center protects him from a conventional platoon penalty. The remaining Yankees have cooled considerably. Anthony Volpe has hit .194 across his last 10 games with 19 strikeouts. Jazz Chisholm Jr. sits at .148, Trent Grisham at .139, and Austin Wells at .207. Chicago counters with Meidroth’s .406 recent average, Vargas’ .525 slugging percentage, and Braden Montgomery’s .308/.357/.487 line.
Yankees vs. White Sox pick, best bet
Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Cody Bellinger remain absent, removing power and on-base percentage from New York’s preferred lineup. That creates Chicago’s path. Schultz can work around Rice, force the bottom half to chase, and keep the game within one run. New York still owns the stronger late-game structure. Its bullpen leads baseball with a 3.06 ERA, with David Bednar sitting at 2.42. Chicago’s relievers carry a 3.99 ERA and a less stable ninth inning. Grant Taylor’s 34.9% strikeout rate is dangerous, but New York can attack softer middle-relief pockets first. Warm conditions and a 13-to-16 mph crosswind should also amplify Schultz’s elevated contact.
The Yankees’ moneyline asks too much from an injured lineup, leaving the run line as the worthwhile route. Fried has allowed one barrel for every 59 batted balls. Schultz has surrendered one every nine. That difference should eventually appear through walks, extra-base contact, or Chicago’s weaker middle relief. New York also owns the best bullpen protection available once Fried exits. The wager fails if Schultz finally pairs his arsenal with strike-throwing or Fried loses sharpness after his layoff. I trust the larger body of work. New York wins 5-2, with −1.5 playable down to +105.
