Athletics vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for MLB on Monday 7/27/26

Boston arrives in West Sacramento at 54-50 after winning 17 of its last 19 games and six consecutive series. The Red Sox have gone 8-2 across their last 10, repeatedly finding offense from the middle and bottom of the order. Sunday’s 6-1 victory included two Jarren Duran RBIs, a two-run Jahmai Jones double, and Wilyer Abreu’s slump-breaking RBI double. The Athletics enter at 44-61 after losing two of three in Minnesota. They erased much of a seven-run deficit Sunday before falling 11-8. Nick Kurtz’s three-run homer supplied the loudest swing during another uneven afternoon. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Athletics and the Boston Red Sox.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Athletics vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

Payton Tolle has given Boston power, length, and dependable strike-throwing from the left side. He owns a 5-6 record, 3.31 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 96 strikeouts, and 26 walks across 89⅔ innings. His 3.19 expected ERA and 3.74 FIP reinforce the quality of that work. Tolle has produced a 26.6% strikeout rate, 12.8% swinging-strike rate, 9.76 strikeouts per nine, and 2.89 walks per nine. Opponents have generated a .267 expected wOBA, 87.8 mph average exit velocity, 34.3% hard-hit rate, and 7.1% barrel rate. He enters after recording 11 strikeouts while allowing one earned run.

Tolle’s road work strengthens the case. He owns a 2.83 ERA with opponents batting .188 across seven starts away from Fenway Park. His 34.9% ground-ball rate leaves some fly-ball exposure, especially inside Sutter Health Park. He has still limited opponents to 1.19 homers per nine through a combination of velocity, extension, and weak contact. Tolle also handles traffic without gifting extra baserunners. His 3.69 strikeout-to-walk ratio separates him from most young power pitchers. An Athletics lineup missing several established right-handed bats now faces a starter carrying his best swing-and-miss form of the season.

Jack Perkins owns a 6.75 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 76 strikeouts, and 24 walks across 62⅔ innings. His four-seamer averages 96 mph, while an 86.1 mph sweeper gives him a legitimate finishing pitch. Perkins has produced a 26.7% strikeout rate and 10.91 strikeouts per nine. His 4.07 FIP and 4.15 expected FIP point toward eventual improvement. The current damage still carries strong statistical backing. Perkins has allowed 1.58 homers per nine with a 33.7% ground-ball rate, .323 BABIP, and 58.3% strand rate. His elevated fastballs create immediate pull-side opportunities for Boston’s left-handed hitters.

Boston’s lineup has kept rolling through injuries and several uneven individual stretches. Andruw Monasterio has hit .471 with five doubles and a 1.310 OPS across six games. Willson Contreras owns a .360/.500/.680 line during his last 10 with two homers and five RBIs. Ceddanne Rafaela has scored nine runs, homered twice, and driven in six. Abreu’s .158 recent average conceals four homers, seven RBIs, and a .500 slugging percentage. Duran has hit .176 during that window while still driving in eight. Boston keeps replacing empty at-bats with production elsewhere, which explains the durability of this 17-2 surge.

Red Sox vs. Athletics pick, best bet

The Athletics have dangerous bats at the top. Tyler Soderstrom has slashed .313/.389/.625 across his last 10 with four doubles, two homers, and six RBIs. Kurtz owns a .402 season on-base percentage and 69 RBIs, giving Tolle his most important left-on-left assignment. Jacob Wilson has struck out only twice during his last 10 while batting .258. The lineup deteriorates quickly without Shea Langeliers, Brent Rooker, and Zack Gelof. Boston also owns the overwhelming bullpen advantage. Red Sox relievers carry a 3.56 ERA, led by Aroldis Chapman’s 1.87 and Garrett Whitlock’s 2.13. The Athletics rank last with a 5.35 relief ERA.

Sutter Health Park should reach 93 degrees with dry air, allowing well-struck fly balls to carry throughout the evening. Boston’s cross-country trip introduces some early risk, particularly against Perkins’ fastball-sweeper combination. The game should tilt heavily once either starter exits. Boston can move from Tolle into Chapman, Whitlock, and a top-five bullpen. The Athletics must protect every Perkins inning with baseball’s weakest relief staff. I’ll play Boston -1.5 at -110, playable through -118. Perkins’ strikeout ceiling and Boston’s travel create the clearest failure points. Tolle, lineup depth, and the bullpen gap support a 7-3 Boston victory.

Best bet: Red Sox -1.5 (-110)

Projected score: Red Sox 7, The Athletics 3

Best bet: Red Sox -1.5 (-110) at Athletics.
