The Westies returns Sunday, July 26, with its fourth episode, “Favours and Funerals.” The episode premieres at 9 p.m. ET on MGM+.
The series has become a genuinely fun piece of Sunday-night television. Its reviews have been warm, and viewers appear increasingly invested in the Westies’ weekly disasters. The cast has helped familiar mob material feel energetic, specific, and enjoyably dangerous.
J.K. Simmons gives Eamon Sweeney the patience of someone accustomed to cleaning up other men’s violence. Tom Brittney makes Jimmy Roarke clever enough to challenge him and reckless enough to keep causing emergencies. Their growing disagreement should carry Episode 4.

The Westies episode four: Favours and Funerals
“The Starship” brought Mickey Flanagan home after a vicious interrogation by John Gotti’s men. Mickey protected Jimmy through every beating, preserving their friendship and the Westies’ secret surrounding Vinnie Zaccaro. Stanley Morgan made that loyalty painful to watch. Mickey survived, although his body and already fragile mind absorbed another round of punishment.
His rescue required the Westies to destroy a Colombian cocaine operation for Paul Castellano. Bridget supplied a rocket launcher from Brendan Cahill’s IRA weapons cache, and Jimmy used it to overwhelm the Starship. He also left the nightclub carrying stolen cocaine, creating the central argument of Episode 4.
Jimmy wants to sell the drugs. Sweeney has his own plans for them. Their disagreement should finally push the show’s generational conflict beyond warnings, lectures, and angry conversations inside Sweeney’s construction trailer.
Jimmy has become the crew’s best planner and most consistent source of danger. He rescued Mickey, mapped the Starship, and recognized how Bridget’s weapons could change the attack. He also killed Vinnie, designed the failed fingerprint scheme, and helped turn a Boston traffic stop into another murder.
Sweeney has protected Jimmy because he recognizes his intelligence. Episode 4 should clarify whether he still sees Jimmy as a possible successor. The stolen cocaine could instead convince Sweeney that Jimmy has become another talented young man who cannot follow orders.
The cocaine also belongs inside the larger conflict between Castellano and Gotti. Castellano wanted the Starship operation destroyed because Gotti had entered the drug business without permission. Jimmy’s attempt to sell the stolen supply could place the Westies between two generations of Gambino leadership.
Gotti will order a hit while Sweeney receives an award from the Hibernian Society. Sweeney will stand before his neighborhood as an honored Irish-American leader while his arrangement with the Italians continues collapsing. That ceremony should give Simmons strong material, especially if the violence reaches inside Sweeney’s carefully protected public life.
Glenn Keenan also crossed a line that Episode 4 cannot ignore. He identified Pat Murphy as the Boston officer’s killer, bargained for Danny’s freedom, and suffocated Pat with a plastic bag. Keenan committed murder to save his son from Sweeney’s influence. Danny may want nothing to do with the life his father chose for him.
Titus Welliver has played Keenan as exhausted, ashamed, and permanently close to another drink. Pat’s murder changes the character. Keenan now carries direct responsibility for protecting the Westies, even while Birdie Polk pushes him toward betraying them.
Bridget deserves equal attention after lending Jimmy Cahill’s rocket launcher. Cahill has moved his operation forward and expects his missing weapons returned. Episode 4 will reveal that his intended target comes from Bridget’s past.
Sarah Bolger has made Bridget one of the show’s strongest characters. She understands the emotional pull of the Irish cause and the ugliness of Cahill’s methods. Learning the target’s identity should force her to decide what her loyalty can still permit.
