Rays vs. Blue Jays NRFI (-105)
Ian Seymour gets the nod tonight for Tampa Bay, making his 13th start of the season. It hasn’t been an amazing campaign from the right-hander, currently putting up a 4.79 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 79 strikeouts (10.5 K/9) over 67.1 innings. However, the second-year pro is the owner of a solid 75.0% career NRFI rate. If there was ever a team Seymour could have success against, it’s Toronto. The Blue Jays are last in runs per game (3.94) and on-base percentage (.302). To boot, the offense has notched the fourth-lowest YRFI rate in baseball (23.53%).
On the other side, it’ll be Shane Bieber toeing the slab. Things haven’t been great for the veteran since making his return from the injured list. Over five starts this season, he’s on the hook for a 5.70 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 19 strikeouts (7.2 K/9). Still, the former Cy Young winner is beginning to show some signs of life. He’s allowed just two total runs over his previous 11.2 innings of work. Bieber also owns a stellar 3.09 ERA over his previous five meetings with Tampa Bay. The Rays have a .717 OPS against right-handed pitching on the road, only 15th in the majors.
Diamondbacks vs. Cardinals NRFI (-125)
Taking the mound for the Diamondbacks tonight will be Brandon Pfaadt. The former top prospect has been a mixed bag since joining the big leagues in 2023. However, the past month has been promising for the 27-year-old. During that time (four starts), he’s produced a 2.14 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. He’ll look to continue that success against a Cardinals offense that has talent, but takes time to get going. The Redbirds have recorded a 28.85% YRFI rate at home, 11th-worst in baseball. When Pfaadt met St. Louis on July 18th, he held the team to two earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.
As for the home team, it’ll be Michael McGreevy on tap tonight. Despite lacking strikeout stuff, the 26-year-old makes up for it by inducing plenty of hard contact. Through 108.0 innings (19 starts), he’s accounted for a 2.92 ERA and 1.10 WHIP. St. Louis’ hurler has also been phenomenal in the first inning (84.2% NRFI). On the other side, this is a spot that could give Arizona some difficulty. The Diamondbacks have put up an MLB-worst .677 OPS against right-handed pitching. When McGreevy faced the Snakes last week, he tossed a 6.1-inning, one-run gem. Keeping that in mind, both of these arms are set up nicely heading into Thursday’s matchup.
