Just three episodes remain this season on HBO’s House of the Dragon. Much of the action in recent weeks has taken place behind the scenes. Rhaenyra might control the Red Keep, but King’s Landing has fallen into disarray. Elsewhere, the Greens are scattered, with uncertain leadership and a new claimant to the throne. At this point, the battle for the Iron Throne is up for grabs.
What’s in store this week on House of the Dragon? Let’s dive into a few predictions ahead of Sunday’s sixth episode.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 6 Predictions
King’s Landing Chaos
The final image from last week’s episode was harrowing, even by House of the Dragon standards: a table filled with several slain gold cloaks, including city watch leader Ser Luthor Largent. Behind those bodies? The words “A Feast for Traitors”, smeared into the walls with blood. It’s the culmination of an elaborate scheme hatched up by none other than Ormund Hightower, who has a network of agents dispersed across the city. By wreaking havoc across King’s Landing, the Greens are hoping to destroy Rhaenyra from within. So far, it’s certainly had an effect.
Due to a depleted treasury, the Blacks are unable to pay any members of the city watch. That’s not great for morale, and it comes at an awful time. With food scarce, King’s Landing is beginning to grow restless. Order is needed, but that could prove impossible without a motivated, capable police force. Daemon has managed to inspire his men before, but the execution of their leader will only make things worse. At some point, Rhaenyra might need to make a drastic move in order to pacify a restless city. Failure to do so could end her rule prematurely.
A New Ruler of Westeros?
Ormund grows bolder in his ambition, using Daeron as a tool for Hightower dominance. His latest scheme? Positioning the youngster as the rightful heir to the throne. That includes minting coins with the Targaryen’s face; that currency has been distributed as far as King’s Landing. Right now, we have yet to see Daeron in action with his dragon Tessarion. However, it’s only a matter of time until the Hightower army is called into battle. As things stand, they wield control over the small town of Tumbleton. Ormund, a savvy operator, knows that Rhaenyra isn’t bold enough to reign fire down on her own supporters. So, for now, the Greens remain entrenched in the city.
Still, a throne can’t be won by staying still. Something needs to happen that will shift this war in favor of the Greens. The time is now too, with all eyes on Aemond and Vhagar to the north. Ulf and Hugh have been doing patrols outside of Tumbleton. Dragons are dragons, but those two are arguably the weakest heavy hitters at Rhaenyra’s disposal. Taking down, or even persuading one of the two to flip sides, could make all the difference. Keep in mind, Hugh’s estranged wife remains held hostage inside of the town. If anyone can turn a weakness into an advantage, it’s Ormund. The scheming Hightower likely has a plan to turn the tides of this war in Daeron’s favor.
Cole’s Crossroads
Things are looking bleak to say the least for Ser Criston Cole. He’s been operating a guerrilla-style campaign in the Riverlands alongside Gwayne Hightower. It’s been somewhat successful, but not in a way that will meaningfully shift the war. The long-term absence of Aemond and Vhagar, currently holed up in Harrenhal, hasn’t helped either. A swelling river during last week’s episode made it impossible for the ragged Green army to cross. Now, it’s uncertain what the next step will be for the King’s Hand.
Gwayne is planning an escape, hoping to narrowly evade capture and reunite with Ormund to the south. It’s a different story for Cole, who already has accepted his inevitable defeat. The Kingsguard is still seeking glory, telling Gwayne of the tales they’ll sing of his valiant defeat at the hands of their enemies. It’s the kind of stuff that works on children in Westeros, but it may not match reality. If we know anything about this universe, Criston’s potential demise could be more gruesome than glorious.
