Chicago Cubs vs. Detroit Tigers prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 7/22/26

Detroit reaches Wednesday’s rubber match at 47-54 after Tuesday’s 11-2 humiliation erased Monday’s 8-6 extra-inning win. Chicago stands 57-44 and controls the National League’s top Wild Card position. The Cubs are 6-4 across their last 10, hitting .258/.332/.446 with 53 runs, 14 homers, and 39 walks. They sent 12 batters through Tuesday’s first inning, then finished with hits from nine players. Detroit’s lineup has leaned more heavily upon concentrated power, especially from Dillon Dingler and Riley Greene. Dingler has three homers, one double, and six RBI through two games at Wrigley. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Cubs vs. Tigers prediction, preview

Keider Montero enters with the sharper pitching form and considerably cleaner expected profile. His five July relief appearances produced a 2.08 ERA, 2.10 FIP, 14 strikeouts, and four unintentional walks across 13 innings. Montero’s previous start brought seven scoreless innings against Houston, with six hits, one walk, and three strikeouts. His season carries a 3.22 ERA, 3.62 FIP, .290 xwOBA, 88.9 mph contact, and 38.5% hard hits. Colin Rea has allowed 18 hits, three homers, six walks, and 13 strikeouts across 16.1 July innings. That stretch produced a 4.41 ERA and 5.37 FIP, extending a season with a .359 xwOBA and 12.4% barrels.

Detroit’s power shape fits Rea’s weakest pitches unusually well. His four-seamer accounts for 42.6% of usage and has allowed a .381 xwOBA, .501 xSLG, and 44.4% hard contact. His sinker owns a .458 xwOBA, while the cutter sits at .479 and the curveball at .654. Dingler has hit .360/.467/.800 across seven games and .316/.375/.579 across 15, with three homers in each window. Greene has eight hits, two homers, six RBI, and six runs across his last 10. Gleyber Torres also returned Monday, restoring a .397 on-base percentage and 15.6% walk rate to Detroit’s upper half. Kerry Carpenter’s bruised heel remains important because his left-handed power would deepen Rea’s fastball problem.

Chicago still carries enough lineup depth to punish Montero’s lone vulnerable shape. His knuckle curve has yielded a .356 xwOBA, .563 xSLG, 43.9% hard contact, and only 20.4% whiffs. Michael Busch enters batting .333 with 14 hits, two homers, six RBI, and nine runs across 10 games. Pete Crow-Armstrong has hit only .200 during that span, yet scored nine runs and drew three walks Tuesday. Montero’s changeup provides the strongest counter, holding hitters to a .213 xwOBA, .262 xSLG, and 20% hard contact. His 5.5% season walk rate also makes another six-run inning built around free passes considerably less likely. Chicago must create damage against strikes rather than waiting for the game to unravel.

Tigers vs. Cubs pick, best bet

Both clubs preserved important relievers during Tuesday’s blowout, although neither bullpen deserves blind trust. Detroit used Ty Madden, Brenan Hanifee, and two position players after Framber Valdez recorded only two outs. Its bullpen owns a 3.68 ERA across 22 innings during the last seven days. Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan received Tuesday off, but their respective 5.24 and 4.74 FIPs weaken the late-inning advantage. Chicago needed only Aaron Civale behind David Peterson, preserving Jacob Webb, Caleb Thielbar, and Tyler Ferguson. Its bullpen carries a 4.08 season ERA while missing Daniel Palencia, Porter Hodge, Hoby Milner, and several additional arms. Wrigley should sit near 71 degrees initially, falling toward 69 under mostly clear skies.

Chicago -125 reflects roughly 53% fair win probability after removing the hold against Detroit +104. That price gives too little weight to the starting-pitcher separation. Montero owns the better recent ERA, FIP, expected contact, walk rate, and primary-pitch outcomes. Rea gives Detroit several direct power routes before Chicago reaches its fresher bullpen. Tigers over 4.5 at +125 becomes attractive with Carpenter starting, though five runs remain a demanding threshold. The full-game over eight loses appeal through Montero’s contact suppression and the cool evening environment.

Best bet: Tigers moneyline +104, playable through -105.

Projected score: Tigers 5, Cubs 4.

Best bet: Tigers (+105) vs. Cubs
