Boston built a 4-0 lead in Game 1 and still leads 4-1 as of this writing. A victory would match the 1946 club’s franchise record with 15 consecutive wins. The nightcap would then offer something no Red Sox team has accomplished across 126 seasons: a 16th straight victory. Boston entered Wednesday 19-2 across its previous 21 games after sitting 12 games below .500 on June 24. Nine victories during the streak required comebacks, including Monday’s 6-5 escape after Baltimore erased three separate deficits. Caleb Durbin supplied the eighth-inning homer, Garrett Whitlock protected the tie, and Aroldis Chapman survived runners at second and third. The bullpen carried a 1.15 ERA during the streak, while Boston repeatedly kept manageable deficits within one swing. That is the relentless quality surrounding this team. Its lineups change, starters leave early, and leads disappear. Somebody still keeps the game alive. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Boston Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Red Sox vs. Orioles prediction, preview
Kyle Bradish gives Baltimore the strongest confirmed foundation in the nightcap. He owns a 3.61 ERA, 3.83 FIP, 4.01 xFIP, 23.3% strikeout rate, and 11.0% walk rate. His 12.0-point K-BB margin trails his peak seasons, though his contact management remains sturdy. Opponents have produced a .303 xwOBA, .228 xBA, .366 xSLG, 88.0 mph exit velocity, and 36.0% hard-hit rate. Bradish has generated 50.2% grounders while allowing 8.2% barrels and only 21.2% fly balls. His last seven starts cover 42 innings with a 3.86 ERA, 41 strikeouts, 17 walks, and a 1.24 WHIP. The arsenal gives Boston several different problems. Bradish throws his sinker 33.8%, slider 26.7%, curveball 22.0%, and four-seamer 17.5%. The curve produces his cleanest misses, while the four-seamer carries his largest expected-damage risk. His platoon splits remain nearly identical, with lefties posting a .700 OPS and righties reaching .708.
Boston’s Game 2 lineup could look weaker on paper without becoming harmless. Masataka Yoshida, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu, Willson Contreras, Durbin, Jarren Duran, and Connor Wong all started Game 1. Their nightcap availability depends upon innings played, early removals, and the opener’s final margin. Fresh alternatives include Roman Anthony, Anthony Seigler, Andruw Monasterio, Carlos Narváez, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Jahmai Jones, and Mickey Gasper. Anthony owns a .352 xwOBA, 92.3 mph exit velocity, 47.4% hard-hit rate, and 9.3% barrels. Seigler carries a .323 xwOBA and 40.5% sweet-spot rate. Monasterio has produced 89.0 mph contact, 9.6% barrels, and a .308 xwOBA. Jones owns 90.7 mph contact, 43.8% hard hits, and a .304 xwOBA despite poor actual results. Boston’s primary anchors remain considerably stronger. Contreras carries a .403 wOBA, .394 xwOBA, 14.7% barrels, and 47.0% hard contact. Abreu adds a .350 xwOBA, .480 xSLG, and 13.1% barrels.
Boston’s pitching decision could change the game by an entire run. Ranger Suárez remains possible after his return was delayed by groin soreness and illness. His season includes a .283 xwOBA, .237 xBA, .338 xSLG, 86.0 mph contact, 31.1% hard hits, and 5.2% barrels. Suárez would give Boston established starter length and an elite contact-suppression profile. Eduardo Rivera would create a bullpen game after working only 9.1 major-league innings. Rivera owns a 2.89 ERA and .263 xwOBA, although those results cover just 23 batted balls. His contact has averaged 90.5 mph, and his latest appearance produced three runs, three hits, and two walks across 2.1 innings. Baltimore can build an imposing right-handed order against either lefty. Pete Alonso owns 12.4% barrels, Coby Mayo 11.4%, Tyler O’Neill 9.1%, and Jackson Holliday 10.1%. The Orioles collectively carry a .324 xwOBA, .408 xSLG, 89.9 mph exit velocity, 42.5% hard-hit rate, and 8.4% barrels.
Orioles vs. Red Sox pick, best bet
Baltimore’s depth carries its own doubleheader damage. Samuel Basallo joined Adley Rutschman on the injured list after producing 16 homers and 46 RBI. Sam Huff started Game 1, making Chadwick Tromp the likeliest nightcap catcher. Johnathan Rodríguez, Colton Cowser, Dylan Beavers, Jeremiah Jackson, and Blaze Alexander give Craig Albernaz several possible substitutions. Cowser owns 10.6% barrels, while Beavers carries a 35.9% sweet-spot rate. The bullpen ledger remains unfinished because Game 1 is still active. Boston entered with the stronger late-inning structure, but Whitlock or Chapman working again would materially narrow that edge. Baltimore’s relievers have posted a 3.07 ERA across their last 10 games. Boston’s group has repeatedly survived heavy workloads, though a second game after a weather delay tests every bridge arm. Thunderstorms remain possible around 5 p.m. Conditions should settle near 76 degrees at first pitch and fall toward 71. Any delay would shorten recovery time between games and complicate both managers’ bullpen plans.
Boston -142 requires 58.7% raw win probability before removing the sportsbook hold. The two-sided market places its fair probability near 56.1%, an aggressive number without a confirmed starter or lineup. Bradish offers Baltimore six-inning stability, a 3.83 FIP, and contact suppression that should travel into Fenway. Boston can still overwhelm him through walks, left-handed power, and the same suffocating late innings defining this streak. History also gives Fenway an extraordinary emotional charge. It cannot restore tired legs or replenish used relievers, but it sure can make the exhaustion feel a little bit more like adrenaline. The Orioles become attractive when Rivera starts, Boston rotates several regulars, or Game 1 consumes Whitlock and Chapman. Suárez would significantly weaken the position, especially alongside Contreras and Abreu starting again. At the current information point, the confirmed starter carries more value than the historic favorite, on what’s a weird weather day in New England.
Hate to do it. But! Best bet: Orioles moneyline +118, conditional upon Rivera or a bullpen game starting for Boston.
Projected score: Orioles 5, Red Sox 4.
Best bet: Orioles (+120) at Red Sox
