San Diego has found several ways to create offense during this 5-5 stretch. The Padres have hit .277/.365/.481 with 63 runs, 94 hits, 17 homers, 43 walks, and 11 steals. Their last five sharpen that surge to .296/.376/.587, with 36 runs, 53 hits, and 13 homers. Tuesday’s 8-3 victory brought the loudest version: four homers, 13 hits, and repeated damage after Atlanta issued eight walks. The Braves have scored 54 runs across their last 10, but Tuesday revealed the current inconsistency. Atlanta produced four hits, went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position, and posted a season-low-adjacent .224 xwOBA on contact. San Diego has won four of five meetings this season and still has not lost a series at Truist Park since 2018. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Atlanta Braves and the San Diego Padres.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Braves vs. Padres prediction, preview
Michael King’s recent run prevention has steadied after a difficult seven-start stretch. He owns a 2.12 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across his last three starts, though his K-BB rate remains only 10%. That rebound followed a 5.45 ERA from May 24 through June 28. King allowed one run across five innings Friday, with four hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. His current form still depends heavily upon contact suppression rather than missing bats. The season profile includes a 20.7% strikeout rate, 9.7% walks, 87.3 mph contact, and 33.2% hard hits. Atlanta ranks 24th in wOBA against righties since June 1 after leading MLB through May. King already exploited that slide June 22, throwing seven scoreless innings with six hits, five strikeouts, and zero walks.
Martín Pérez arrives from the injured list without any encouraging recent foundation. His final three appearances before the forearm injury covered 13.1 innings with six strikeouts and nine walks. One came against San Diego, when Pérez walked four across four innings. His 3.54 ERA still benefits from a .217 BABIP and 77.6% strand rate. The fielding-independent line sits closer to ordinary, with a 106 FIP- and 100 xFIP-. Pérez also carries an 18.6% strikeout rate and 9.6% walk rate. He has not pitched since a 92 mph liner struck his left forearm July 5. Atlanta also optioned JR Ritchie after his 68-pitch relief appearance Tuesday. A short Pérez return would expose the same middle-relief innings Atlanta just needed Ritchie to absorb.
San Diego’s hottest bats all attack Pérez from the right side. Fernando Tatis Jr. has hit .450/.522/.950 across his last five games, with nine hits, three homers, nine RBI, six runs, and one strikeout. Ty France owns the same nine hits during that span, alongside four homers, eight RBI, and a 1.621 OPS. Over his last 17 games, France has hit .355/.417/.677 with five homers and 12 RBI. Manny Machado has hit .353 with four homers, eight RBI, and six runs across nine games. His 12-game on-base streak now includes three homers during this series. Tatis’ 474-foot blast Tuesday followed season-long contact measuring 92.1 mph with a 53.2% hard-hit rate. Machado’s two homers traveled 412 and 418 feet. This is sustained authority from three hitters currently seeing the baseball with unusual clarity.
Padres vs. Braves pick, best bet
Atlanta’s counter remains credible, although its hottest production is less evenly distributed. Austin Riley has three homers, six RBI, and six runs across his last 10 games, but only eight hits. Matt Olson has five hits and one homer across his last five. Drake Baldwin owns a .247 average with four homers and 15 RBI during the last 30 days. The Braves have still produced a .769 OPS against righties during that window, with 22 homers and 59 walks across 24 games. King’s recent 10% K-BB rate gives Atlanta opportunities to extend innings, especially around Olson, Riley, Baldwin, and Mike Yastrzemski. San Diego’s bullpen carries fresh workload concerns after using Yuki Matsui, Adrian Morejon, Bradgley Rodríguez, and Mason Miller Tuesday. Atlanta’s larger issue sits earlier. Warm, humid conditions and a 40% thunderstorm chance could shorten Pérez’s return and deepen the bullpen exposure.
Atlanta -117 remains difficult to justify against King’s contact suppression and San Diego’s current offensive shape. The Padres have scored 6.3 runs per game across their last 10 and 6.6 across their last five. Pérez brings poor recent command, uncertain length, and no competitive innings since July 5. San Diego can reach five through immediate right-handed damage or Atlanta’s shortened middle-relief structure. Padres -103 has value, though King’s reduced strikeout margin leaves Atlanta capable of winning a 6-5 game. Padres over 4.5 runs at +105 isolates the cleaner matchup advantage. The wager remains playable through -105 with Tatis, Machado, France, and Merrill occupying the top six.
Run it back. Best bet: Padres o4.5 runs at +105.
Projected score: Padres 5, Braves 4.
Best bet: Padres TT o4.5 runs (+105) at Braves
