Everything You Need to Know Before Cape Fear Episode 8
Let’s break down the latest plot developments during last week’s seventh episode, ‘Mongrel’:
- It’s safe to say that Zach has been brainwashed. He starts out this week’s episode at Max’s home, begging to go on a fishing trip with Nevaeh and the man he now believes is his father. Meanwhile, Anna is holding Nevaeh hostage with her pistol. Then, Natalie ends up pepper spraying her.
- Tom runs over to Max’s house, demanding he hands over his son. He then grabs Zach and drags the teen out into the street against his will. When Max attempts to bring Zach back, Tom begins pummeling him repeatedly. The biggest issue for the disgraced attorney? His punches are out in the open, with people filming the entire assault. The only thing that stops Tom is a knife to the shoulder from none other than Zach.
- Despite being sent to jail, Neveah denies her father playing a role in her terrorizing the Bowdens. Elsewhere, Zach is sent to a psych ward. His drug trip from last week runs the risk of permanent psychosis, which brings back bad memories for Tom. Keep in mind, he lost his brother at a young age.
- Natalie begins asking some difficult parenting questions as well. That leads her to Paul, Anna’s ex-fianceé. He tells the teenager that he thinks he’s her father, although he can’t prove it with 100% accuracy. There’s a chance it could even be Max for all she knows. When confronted, Anna is adamant that Tom is Natalie’s father, even if it isn’t biological.
- We reconnect with Anna’s father Brandon, who we met briefly earlier in the series. He’s desperate to get back into his daughter’s good graces, so much so that he’s willing to risk going back to jail. That means attempting to frame Max by planting leftover scopolamine from last week’s drug-induced haze inside of his home. Then, the Bowdens plan to call it in as an anonymous tip. It’ll be Brandon’s job to place the drugs at Max’s house.
- Max comes by the Bowden house and brings Natalie back her cat. Before leaving, he shows her a text message he sent Nevaeh, warning his daughter to leave the family alone. Right as Max begins to leave, Natalie makes a sudden move: she’s coming with him on a road trip to visit his parents. They live in a small coastal town called Cape Fear…
- Anna’s coworkers Noa and Ray are beginning to question Max’s motives as well. The latter does some digging into the identity of Crystal, which means heading to Cape Fear. The big reveal? The woman is actually Max’s half-sister.
- Upon arriving at the Cady family home, we meet Max’s abusive father Robert (played by Ron Perlman). He tells Max that if he comes within “spitting distance” of Crystal, “I’mma f*** you up.” It’s revealed that Robert kept his own son in a cage along with his dogs. That Max eventually became a violent sociopath doesn’t come as much of a surprise. It might be the first time all series we’ve seen someone make our chief antagonist uncomfortable.
- Ray is doing even more digging, eventually finding himself on Max’s houseboat and taking pictures. Meanwhile, Cady gave Natalie a peach filled with tranquilizer, knocking her out almost immediately.
- Upon arriving, Max encounters Ray as he’s leaving the houseboat. As the two come face to face, the former implores the ex-convict to let go whatever pain he’s holding on to. In response, Max gives Ray three bullets in the stomach, killing him in broad daylight.
- Right after Ray’s body is stuffed in the trunk, Natalie finally wakes up. After a series of questions, he tells the girl that he is in fact her father. Then, Max decides to baptize Nat in the Cape Fear river. After that, the two make the long drive back to Savannah. Max drops Natalie off at her parents’ house, with the gun he used to kill Ray hidden in her backpack.
