It’s been a strange season for the American League. The talent pool feels awfully flat, with only five teams above .500 in the entire league, and no teams truly out of the Wild Card race. That has produced some interesting odds for the individual award races. Let’s check in on the AL Rookie of the Year aces with updated odds.
Here are the updated AL Rookie of the Year odds on the DraftKings Sportsbook:
Kevin McGonigle has a solid lead, and rightly so. The No. 2 prospect in baseball coming into the year, McGonigle’s 3.9 fWAR mark is the sixth-highest number in the entire league and comfortably first among all AL rookies. A dynamic fielder and elite contact hitter, he’s been a gem for the Tigers all season long. At -245, our oddsmakers are quite comfortable that this is his race to lose.
But there are some great names behind him. Despite his long injury layoff, Munetaka Murakami still leads all AL rookies in OPS, and a big second half for the playoff-hopeful White Sox could put him back in the race. Slugging Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo has provided a ton of power this season, and the 21-year-old has put up some big stretches in his young career. Kazuma Okamoto has been a huge power bat for the Blue Jays. Still, his status as a much older rookie is working against him, though he does lead AL rookies in home runs.
Behind that top four are the real long shots. We have four AL Central rookies, including three Guardians, tied at +3000. Carter Jensen has swung a sweet bat from behind the plate for the Royals this season. Travis Bazzana, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft, was an All-Star selection and puts up good power-speed numbers for the Guardians. He’s tied with teammates Chase DeLauter, a sweet-swinging outfielder, and starter Parker Messick, our first pitcher on the list. After that is Payton Tolle, the promising Red Sox starter, and a pair of White Sox outfielders in Sam Antonacci and Tristan Peters.
Make no mistake, this is McGonigle’s award to lose, but there is plenty of talent behind him that can make a push. Will the Tigers’ rookie put in a strong second half to secure the award? Or will someone else be able to close the gap?
