Royal Birkdale Golf Club (par 70, 7,223 yards, fescue/bentgrass greens) in Southport, England, will host the 154th Open Championship. This marks the 11th time this track has hosted the Open Championship, most recently in 2017, when Jordan Spieth (-12) won by three shots. This week’s field features 152 golfers and a top-70 and ties cut after the first two rounds.

Ryan Fox to make the cut
Fox has only missed two cuts in 15 starts this season and those missed cuts were rather excusable, as he was dealing with kidney stones around this time in the spring. Outside of this small stretch, Fox has been very steady, finishing inside the top-30 at 10-of-13 events. The 39-year-old has gained strokes on approach and with his putter in three of his last four starts, and Fox has only missed two cuts in his last 10 major starts. The veteran most recently finished T23rd at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills last month. Fox has made 6-of-9 cuts at the Open Championship with two top-25 finishes. He did miss the cut at Royal Birkdale in 2017, but Fox was a far less polished player back then, as the No.93 ranked gofer in the world. He returns to Royal Birkdale as the No.56 ranked player in the world and since his last start at this par 70, Fox has won six times, twice on the PGA TOUR and four on the DP World Tour, so he is used to competing on European soil.
Nico Echavarria to make the cut
Echavarria missed the cut at Royal Portrush last season, but this was just his first start at the Open Championship. The Columbian is playing solid golf nowadays and he should have a much better outing in his second attempt at the major this week. Echavarria has only missed one cut in his last nine starts and he is less than five months removed from his win at the Cognizant Classic, which is his third victory on the PGA TOUR. At the Genesis Scottish Open this past week, Echavarria finished T36th and he gained strokes on approach and with his putter at the Renaissance Club, which is his second made cut in three starts at the links course. Echavarria has under par in seven of his past eight rounds and him making the cut at Royal Birkdale is a likely outcome in this form.
Jesper Svensson to make the cut
After missing the cut in his Open Championship debut in 2024, Svensson finished T16th at Royal Portrush last season and he was awesome over the weekend, shooting a 3-under 68 in the third round and a 5-under 66 in the final round. Svensson should be confident this week, not just because of his success at last year’s Open Championship, but because he is playing strong golf right now. Svensson has only missed one cut in his last five starts worldwide, including a T9 at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson and a T4 at the RBC Canadian Open. Svensson finished T52nd at the Genesis Scottish Open last week and the Swede should find himself inside the cutline at Royal Birkdale come Friday afternoon.
