San Diego Padres vs. Arizona Diamondbacks prediction, pick for MLB on Thursday 7/09/26

Arizona’s 8-0 opener does not carry the same weight after the last two nights. San Diego answered with a 4-1 win Tuesday, then finally put together the kind of offensive game its lineup had been missing. The Padres scored in five straight innings Wednesday, got three doubles from Miguel Andujar, two-hit nights from Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, and Luis Campusano, and a Campusano homer in a 10-4 win. Arizona helped the whole thing unravel with walks, a balk dispute, defensive stress, and a Taylor Clarke bridge inning that got hit hard. The broader form still keeps this from being a blind Padres side. San Diego is 3-7 over its last 10, with a .266 average, 6.95 ERA, and minus-28 run differential. Arizona is 4-6 in that same window, hitting .223 with a 4.15 ERA and minus-three run differential. This is a specific San Diego scoring bet, not a full endorsement of a .500 team. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Padres vs. Diamondbacks prediction, preview

Merrill Kelly is the reason San Diego’s recent spark can carry into one more night. He enters 6-8 with a 5.71 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, 53 strikeouts, 35 walks, 100 hits, and 19 homers allowed across 86 2/3 innings. The contact profile is even louder than the ERA. Kelly has allowed a 90.1 mph average exit velocity, 43.9% hard-hit rate, 42.9% sweet-spot rate, .379 wOBA, .412 xwOBA, and 14.5% barrel rate. He still owns a strong career mark against San Diego, at 9-6 with a 3.41 ERA in 18 starts, so there is one fair pushback. The current version is giving up too many barreled balls and too many useful launch angles to trust that history fully. Petco can mute cheap carry, but it cannot erase line drives, doubles, walks, and a stressed fifth inning.

Assuming Manny Machado returns after negative foot X-rays, San Diego gets the right middle-order piece back against Kelly. Machado’s average is ugly, but the recent power is juicy. He homered and walked three times Sunday to snap the Padres’ eight-game losing streak, then sat Wednesday after the toe scare. He still has 18 homers, 51 RBI, a .216 ISO, and an 11.8% walk rate. Tatis gives the top of the order a base-stealing and contact start, with 23 steals, a .345 OBP, and 106 wRC+. Campusano has forced his way into the conversation with four homers, a .302 ISO, .435 wOBA, and 181 wRC+ in a smaller sample. Andujar’s three-double game fits this ballpark perfectly. The Padres just showed the exact scoring style they need here: pressure, gaps, stolen bases, and one timely swing.

Arizona has enough at the top to keep the full-game over alive, and Ketel Marte is the hottest Diamondbacks bat. He is 12-for-39 over his last 10 games, with two doubles, a triple, three homers, and the kind of switch-hit damage that can punish Griffin Canning. Canning enters 1-6 with a 6.71 ERA, 1.61 WHIP, 52 hits, 38 earned runs, 30 walks, and 50 strikeouts across 51 innings. His 22.0% strikeout rate gives him some escape routes, but the 13.2% walk rate and 49.0% hard-hit rate keep Arizona in the game. Corbin Carroll, Gabriel Moreno, and Geraldo Perdomo give the D-backs enough speed, contact, and on-base pressure to get Canning out early. The issue is what happens after that. San Diego can turn the game over to better arms than Arizona can.

Diamondbacks vs. Padres pick, best bet

The bullpen gap is the bet separator, and the details are stronger than the surface version. San Diego ranks third in bullpen ERA at 3.48 over 380 2/3 innings, with Mason Miller at 0.96. Arizona ranks 12th at 3.93 over 279 1/3 innings, with Paul Sewald at 4.50. That makes the Diamondbacks’ half of the over harder to trust late. The usage layer adds texture, though. San Diego’s pen is not perfectly clean, with Wandy Peralta at 42 pitches, Adrián Morejón at 62, Yuki Matsui at 58, and Ron Marinaccio at 46 over the last seven days. Arizona also has stress points, with Ryan Thompson at 66 pitches, Jonathan Loáisiga at 52, Taylor Clarke at 51, and Clarke carrying a 9.00 ERA in that window. Kelly putting Arizona into early bridge decisions is still the better late-game scoring angle. San Diego’s weather sits around 68-70 degrees through game hours, with clouds and no rain, so the park pushes this away from a lazy full-game over and toward the more targeted team total.

The Padres moneyline asks too much from Canning, even with the bullpen advantage behind him. The run line has a tempting price, but it needs San Diego to win by margin in a game with starter volatility. Over 9 at plus money is playable because both starters can create traffic, but Arizona still has to finish its half against the better bullpen.

The best bet is Padres team total over 4.5 (-105), playable to -120. Kelly’s current contact damage, San Diego’s Wednesday breakout, Machado’s assumed return, and Arizona’s recent defensive/bullpen wobble all point toward five Padres runs.

Projected score: Padres 5, Diamondbacks 4.

Best bet: Padres TT o4.5 runs (-105) vs. Diamondbacks
