Minnesota Twins vs. Cleveland Guardians prediction, pick for MLB on Thursday 7/09/26

Minnesota owns the current shape of this series. The Twins have won four straight and five of six overall. They took the first two games from Cleveland by 3-1 and 6-5 scores. Tuesday was clean, with seven one-run innings from Taj Bradley. Wednesday was looser, with Alan Roden delivering a walk-off hit in his season debut. Cleveland has lost four straight, and Wednesday’s bullpen leak was hard to ignore. The Guardians walked in two seventh-inning runs, used seven relievers, and let Minnesota survive a game Cleveland had chances to close. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Guardians.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Twins vs. Guardians prediction, preview

Gavin Williams gives Cleveland the best pitcher in the game, but his profile has become louder than the ERA. He is 9-4 with a 3.89 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, 28.3% strikeout rate, 8.3% walk rate, 3.83 FIP, and 3.25 xFIP. That can absolutely slow Minnesota’s current run. The contact file keeps the total alive: 91.1 mph average exit velocity, 48.3% hard-hit rate, 12.4% barrel rate, .329 xwOBA, and a 4.66 xERA. His sinker and cutter are the Minnesota path. The sinker has become a hard-contact pitch, and the cutter has carried extra-base damage. Williams can strike out seven and still allow enough traffic for this over.

Bailey Ober is the bigger run-environment pressure point. He returns from right elbow inflammation after missing more than a month. His season line is 6-3 with a 4.59 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 46 strikeouts, and 66.2 innings. The deeper file is worse: 16.4% strikeout rate, 6.4% walk rate, 10.0% K-BB rate, 1.62 HR/9, and 4.98 FIP. His rehab outing reached 76 pitches, so Minnesota can let him work. The stuff did not fully answer the concern. He generated five whiffs on 39 swings, and his fastball averaged 88.0 mph. Cleveland does not need a peak offense here. It gets a returning starter with low strikeout margin and a fastball that can be lifted.

Minnesota’s recent-form case starts with Kody Clemens and Roden. Clemens went 2-for-4 with the late RBI triple Tuesday, then 3-for-4 with a double and RBI Wednesday. He is 14-for-41 over his last 10 with two doubles, a triple, four homers, and 13 RBI. Roden came up after Byron Buxton hit the injured list, went 2-for-5, and won Wednesday’s game. The lineup is thinner without Buxton and Ryan Jeffers, which blocks a full endorsement of the Twins moneyline. Buxton’s 25 homers and .575 slugging percentage are gone. Jeffers’ .295/.408/.541 line is gone too. Trevor Larnach, Clemens, Josh Bell, Royce Lewis, Roden, and Luke Keaschall still give Minnesota enough contact, lift, and current belief to pressure Williams.

Guardians vs. Twins pick, best bet

Cleveland’s season-long offense remains the counterweight against laying the road moneyline. José Ramírez is out, and that removes the club’s best switch bat, top baserunner, and safest run-conversion piece. The Guardians entered this series with a 93 wRC+, while Minnesota sat at 106. That is a meaningful team gap. This matchup still points Cleveland toward runs. Brayan Rocchio has a 111 wRC+, 15 steals, and a 13.5% strikeout rate. Travis Bazzana has a 110 wRC+, 11.8% walk rate, and 12 steals. Chase DeLauter owns a 119 wRC+, .346 OBP, and .428 slugging percentage. Kyle Manzardo gives them a left-handed power lane against Ober’s vulnerable fastball shape.

The late-game setup also favors the total more than either side. Cleveland’s bullpen has the better season profile, with a 3.80 ERA entering the series. Minnesota’s pen came in last in MLB by ERA at 5.28. That usually creates a Cleveland edge after the starters leave. Wednesday changed the day-to-day read. Cleveland burned through the bullpen, walked eight hitters, and watched Tim Herrin leave after a comebacker hit his throwing elbow. Minnesota’s bullpen remains a risk, and Ober’s return could put that group in the game by the middle innings. Warm, dry weather also helps the run environment. Minneapolis sits in the upper 70s and low 80s through the game window, with no delay threat.

The recent form points to Minnesota, the starter matchup points to Cleveland runs, and the bullpen setup points to late scoring. That combination makes the full-game total the best expression. Cleveland ML around -130 asks too much from a cold team missing Ramírez. Minnesota ML is tempting, but Williams’ strikeout edge and the Buxton/Jeffers absences keep it behind the total.

Best bet: Over 8.5 (-117), playable to -120. Best derivative: Guardians team total over 4.5. Plus-money add: Twins team total over 4.5.

Projected score: Guardians 5, Twins 4.

Best bet: Twins vs. Guardians o8.5 total runs (-105)
