Despite the expansion of the FIFA World Cup to 48 teams, there have been some instances of deja vu, as familiar foes have faced off. Morocco faced Canada in the 2022 World Cup group stage and France in the semifinals. At 4 p.m. ET, the Atlas Lions will face Les Bleus again, this time in the quarterfinal in Boston.
The winner will face either Spain or Belgium in the semifinals. Morocco’s advancement would mark the second consecutive tournament in which it has reached at that stage, while a France win would bring it to the brink of back-to-back-to-back World Cup finals, joining Germany and Brazil in that vaunted group.
Throughout the World Cup, DraftKings Network will be highlighting several of the tournament’s marquee matchups, breaking down every goal and major moment. Here’s how this highly-anticipated rematch played out:
France vs. Morocco odds
Les Bleus are -170 favorites to win in regular time (-400 to advance to the semifinals) at DraftKings Sportsbook, and the Atlas Lions are +500 (+300 to advance). There are +280 odds that the match will be even after regular time.

FT: AND THAT’S IT! AN ABSOLUTELY DOMINATING PERFORMANCE BY FRANCE COMES TO AN END! JUST AS IT ENDED IN 2022, IT ENDS LES BLEUS 2, ATLAS LIONS 0! AFRICA IS OUT OF THE WORLD CUP, AND THE WINNER WILL EITHER BE ARGENTINA OR A EUROPEAN SIDE! NOW, WILL IT BE BELGIUM OR SPAIN TO FACE FRANCE IN DALLAS NEXT TUESDAY?
90’+4: OH, JEAN-PHILIPPE MATETA HAD A CHANCE TO MAKE IT THREE THERE, BUT HIS LEFT-FOOTED SHOT OFF OF DEMBรLร’S ASSIST WAS WEAK!
90’+2: Morocco has been on the front foot for most of additional time so far! It looks like any goal would be too little, too late for the Atlas Lions, but they’re still fighting.
88′: FRANCE IS KEEPING THE PRESSURE ON! BRADLEY BARCOLA WENT NEAR POST, AND BOUNOU GOT HIS FINGERTIPS TO IT! LES BLEUS WANT THREE!
85′: Another World Cup debut! Amine Sbaรฏ has come on for the Atlas Lions, just moments after they nearly scored with Neil El Aynaoui’s header into the side netting!
83′: That was Morocco’s first shot on target of the game! Achraf Hakimi won a free kick just outside the box and laid it off for Ounahi, who fired just to Mike Maignan’s right! It wasn’t a difficult stop for the AC Milan shot-stopper, but it was a stop nonetheless.
80′: Jean-Phillippe Mateta made a great run down the center of the pitch, and Bradley Barcola couldn’t quite find him! So much for France taking it easy to protect its lead; Les Bleus remain on the front foot. All wins count the same, but surely these French youngsters would like a third goal!
77′: Uh-oh, Kylian Mbappรฉ went down injured, and his match is over! He seems to be walking relatively normally, but his right foot looked to be in pain, so that’ll be something to monitor as Les Bleus look forward to a potential semifinal. He and Douรฉ are now off, and Bradley Barcola and Jean-Philippe Mateta are now on.
74′: Two more chances for the Atlas Lions. Gessime Yassine and Zakaria El Ouahdi have come on, and Anass Salah-Eddine and Brahim Dรญaz have come off! Morocco’s AFCON hero and scapegoat could be done for the tournament!
73′: OH, ALMOST AN OWN GOAL BY DAYOT UPAMECANO TO BRING MOROCCO BACK INTO THE GAME! HE WAS TRYING TO CLEAR CHEMSDINE TALBI’S CROSS, AND HE ALMOST LOBBED IT PAST MIKE MAIGNAN, BUT IT THANKFULLY ENDED UP HITTING THE TOP OF THE NET!
71′: A new face! Warren Zaรฏre-Emery, a Paris Saint-Germain teammate of Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ and Achraf Hakimi, has now made his World Cup debut at the age of 20 after replacing Manu Konรฉ! With Adrien Rabiot and N’Golo Kantรฉ starting to age out of the French squad, it surely won’t be his last.
68′: Hydration break time! The tone of this match has turned quickly! The Atlas Lions are now +7000 to move on, and Les Bleus are so likely to advance that the odds have been taken down! It looks like this is it for Africa’s tournament!
66′: AND WHEN LES BLEUS TURN IT ON, THEY REALLY TURN IT ON! OUSMANE DEMBรLร HAS GOTTEN IN ON THE FUN WITH HIS FIFTH GOAL OF THIS WORLD CUP! HE CUT BACK AFTER A SOLO RUN AND STRUCK ONE FROM OUTSIDE THE BOX WITH HIS MAGICAL RIGHT FOOT, FIRING IT INTO THE BOTTOM RIGHT CORNER OF THE NET! NOW, MOROCCO FINDS ITSELF IN A REALLY, REALLY DEEP HOLE. FRANCE 2, MOROCCO 0.
63′: Issa Diop has now received a yellow card for bringing down Mbappรฉ! If the Atlas Lions advance, Diop will be suspended for the semifinal!
62′: Unsurprisingly, Mohamed Ouahbi is now making some changes! Soufiane Rahimi has replaced Bilal El Khannous, and Sofyan Amrabat is now on in place of Ayyoub Bouaddi.
60′: WAS THERE EVER A DOUBT?! KYLIAN MBAPPร SHOT THROUGH TRAFFIC FROM THE LEFT CORNER OF THE 18-YARD BOX AND BURIED IT INTO THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE NET! FRANCE NOW LEADS 1-0, AND IF MOROCCO WANTS TO ADVANCE TO THE WORLD CUP SEMIFINALS FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE TIME, IT NEEDS TO SCORE IN THE NEXT 30 MINUTES! MBAPPร NOW HAS EIGHT GOALS THIS TOURNAMENT, TIED WITH LIONEL MESSI IN THE GOLDEN BOOT RACE!
56′: OH, THAT COULD’VE BEEN THE CHANCE FOR KYLIAN MBAPPร! HE MADE A GREAT RUN, AND OLISE FOUND A GREAT BALL IN BETWEEN ISSA DIOP AND NOUSSAIR MAZRAOUI, AND MBAPPร SHOT IT OVER THE BAR!
55′: YASSINE BOUNOU WITH ANOTHER SAVE, HIS FIRST OF THE SECOND HALF! Desirรฉ Douรฉ went for it from just outside the box, but he kicked it right into Bounou’s chest!
52′: The Atlas Lions won a corner after Chemsdine Talbi took on Dayot Upamecano on the left side of the box! Morocco has been the aggressor in this second half so far!
48′: The first attacking chance of the second half went to Brahim Dรญaz! It was blocked, but Morocco has shown much more aggression, with Ounahi going on a great run up the center of the pitch just a minute earlier! The tempo has really turned up on this match.
46′: We’re back underway in the second half! Will France finally break through? Will the Atlas Lions show more attacking aggression? It’s all left to play for in the final 45 minutes!
HT: AND THAT’LL DO IT FOR THE FIRST HALF! IT’S STILL SCORELESS IN BOSTON DESPITE LES BLEUS’ MANAGING 13 SHOTS WORTH 1.87 EXPECTED GOALS AND THE ATLAS LIONS ONLY ONE SHOT TOTAL! FRANCE IS -500 TO ADVANCE AND MOROCCO +360!
45’+5: French fans can breathe! Hakimi went for the shot, but he missed wide of the near post! The Morocco captain was going for his second goal of this tournament, but that one wasn’t particularly close!
45’+4: Morocco has won a free kick in a dangerous position! Brahim Dรญaz went for goal, and Adrien Rabiot blocked it with his hand just outside the penalty box!
45’+3: Desirรฉ Douรฉ and Achraf Hakimi got tangled up near the edge of the penalty area, and protest as Douรฉ might, it ended up being a foul on the Frenchman, so penalty scare averted.
45’+2: Lucas Digne went for a bold shot from well outside the box, and it went off the crossbar!
44′: There hasn’t been a shot by either team in a while at this point! Still zero on the match for Morocco, still 10 for France.
38′: Neil El Aynaoui committed a foul on Manu Konรฉ there in still another turnover for Morocco! So far, it’s been a struggle for the African giants, who have yet to attempt a shot, but a 0-0 position against France at this point in the game isn’t a bad place to be. Les Bleus hadn’t scored by this point against Paraguay in the Round of 16, but they did twice in the group stage, so to hold them scoreless is a positive sign for the Atlas Lions’ defense.
35′: 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi has been brilliant today, but that was his first major mistake! He gave it away to Desirรฉ Douรฉ, but his shot was saved by Bounou! The Canadian-born goalkeeper saved his country again!
33′: The crowd rose in collective anticipation as Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ cut it back onto his left foot! He missed wide left, but that a sight that Morocco fans will dread all day.
29′: And now it’s the hydration break, and it’s still 0-0 after Mbappรฉ’s missed penalty, which was also Bounou’s first penalty save in regular time for the Atlas Lions! So far, Les Bleus have managed seven shots (two on target) worth 1.43 xG, while Morocco has yet to attempt a shot! The odds are still relatively unchanged; France is -195 to win in regular time and the Atlas Lions +700.
28′: BALL DON’T LIE!? YASSINE BOUNOU SAVED THE PENALTY! KYLIAN MBAPPร WENT LOW AND TO THE RIGHT, AND BOUNOU GUESSED RIGHT! IT STAYS 0-0!
27′: What a huge VAR check this is…did Douรฉ foul Hakimi, or will the penalty stand?
25′: THERE WILL BE A PENALTY FOR FRANCE! LES BLEUS STARTED A COUNTER AFTER DESIRร DOUร’S TACKLE AGAINST ACHRAF HAKIMI, AND THE COUNTER LED TO A PASS DOWN TO MBAPPร, WHO WAS ONE-ON-ONE WITH NOUSSAIR MAZRAOUI IN THE BOX! MAZRAOUI MADE A RECKLESS CHALLENGE!
23′: A TACKLE FROM ACHRAF HAKIMI ON KYLIAN MBAPPร! THIS IS WHAT WE LOVE TO SEE BETWEEN TWO OF THE BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD!
21′: That was an uncharacteristic high turnover by Achraf Hakimi! France has had the ball for most of the last few minutes, and Adrien Rabiot’s missed header looked like it’d provide the Atlas Lions with a respite, but those are the sorts of mistakes Hakimi can’t make if Morocco wants to get itself some rest defensively!
18′: There was the first shot of the game for reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembรฉlรฉ! His header went wide of the net, and Yassine Bounou was unbothered.
16′: I’m not sure if that was a shot or a pass by Hakimi, but it wasn’t a good one. The Atlas Lions had won a foul along the right sideline, and Hakimi sent one in towards the box, but instead of finding either a teammate’s head or the back of the net, it went well over the goal and into the stands! The reigning African Player of the Year will have to do better.
15′: There’s the French high press! Chemsdine Talbi played it backwards to Bounou, and before he knew it, Dembรฉlรฉ was charging! Bounou safely got it out, but that’s the kind of aggression that Les Bleus will have to play with to win this match.
12′: Bilal Al Khannous had recorded an interception on Adrien Rabiot and tried to send one across to Chemsdine Talbi, but it went well over Talbi’s head and nearly over the touch line! A poor pass from Al Khannous, but that was a fairly big mistake by Rabiot that could prove costly if he repeats it.
10′: Nice block by Issa Diop there on Desirรฉ Douรฉ’s shot from outside the box on the left. Diop had long sought to represent France but ultimately chose the Atlas Lions prior to this tournament.
9′: Morocco just attempted (and completed) approximately 30 passes, but barely crossed the halfway line! Both of these teams have solid attacks, but it could be a slow, methodical game, especially from the Atlas Lions.
5′: Mbappรฉ, marked by one of his best friends and former club teammate Achraf Hakimi! That’ll certainly be one of the matchups to watch today, whenever the Atlas Lions’ captain matches up directly with Les Bleus’.
4′: There’s the first shot for Kylian Mbappรฉ! He fired from outside the box, and his deflected effort was saved by Yassine Bounou, though it might’ve gone wide of the post anyway. Bounou then made another save off the ensuing corner!
1′: THE FIRST QUARTERFINAL IS UNDERWAY, AND IT’S A HUGE ONE BETWEEN LES BLEUS AND THE ATLAS LIONS! WILL FRANCE MAKE A THIRD STRAIGHT SEMIFINAL, OR WILL AFRICA’S LAST HOPE MOVE ON? The biggest lineup note: Morocco striker Ismael Saibari is out, so Bilal Al Khannous will start up front.
