Detroit Tigers vs. Athletics prediction, pick for MLB on Thursday 7/09/26

The Tigers are 42-50, but they have won seven of eight and opened this series with 6-2 and 6-1 wins. The Athletics are 41-51, have dropped five straight, and need Jack Perkins to stop a sweep at Comerica Park. This read assumes Dillon Dingler and Nick Kurtz both play, which raises the offensive ceiling on both sides. The series shape still tilts toward Detroit. The Tigers have outscored the Athletics 12-3, forced early bullpen work, and gotten production from stars and depth bats. The Athletics went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position Wednesday and left nine runners on base. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Tigers vs. Athletics prediction, preview

The Athletics’ pitching setup is the main reason Detroit’s team total beats the moneyline. Perkins is 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 70 strikeouts, and 54.2 innings. His starter split is the bigger issue: 8.10 ERA, 5.44 FIP, 1.69 WHIP, seven homers, 34 strikeouts, and 14 walks over 26.2 innings. His four-seamer and cutter have carried the damage, and his batted-ball profile creates traffic risk. Perkins has allowed 89.3 mph average exit velocity, a .339 wOBA, .313 xwOBA, 38.4% hard-hit rate, and 7.3% barrel rate. The contact has also lived in the air too often for comfort. If José Suarez opens instead, Detroit still gets a lefty with traffic issues before Perkins or the bullpen arrives.

Detroit’s recent offense has more than one engine, which keeps the heater believable. Kevin McGonigle gives them a controlled top-of-order bat with strong on-base skills and low strikeout pressure. Riley Greene brings the best all-around damage profile, and his current season sits around a 144 wRC+ against right-handed pitching. Dingler is the swing piece. Assuming he plays, Detroit keeps a catcher bat with 15 homers and a 143 wRC+ in the projected righty matchup. Kerry Carpenter adds left-handed thump with 13 homers and a 121 wRC+ in that same split. Spencer Torkelson’s full-season profile is streakier, but he just hit a three-run homer in this series. That matters more in a team-total bet than a batting-average argument.

Framber Valdez keeps the full-game over firmly in play. He is 4-6 with a 4.29 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 78 strikeouts, and 100.2 innings. His last start was ugly, with five runs and nine hits over five innings against Texas. The deeper file backs up the concern. Valdez has allowed 89.9 mph average exit velocity, a 42.1% hard-hit rate, .322 wOBA, .324 xwOBA, and 6.9% barrel rate. His sinker-heavy approach can still produce grounders, but the strikeout rate is down, and the Athletics have enough bats to punish loose command. Kurtz leads that case with 20 homers, a .409 OBP, .503 slugging percentage, .233 ISO, and 151 wRC+. Shea Langeliers, Zack Gelof, and Tyler Soderstrom all sit at 121 wRC+, with enough power to keep the Athletics attached.

Athletics vs. Tigers pick, best bet

The bullpen, health, and weather layers still favor isolating Detroit’s offense. The Athletics’ staff has been forced into too much middle relief, and their starters have not protected the bullpen well. Detroit got useful work Wednesday from Keider Montero, Tyler Holton, and Beau Brieske after Troy Melton gave them 5.1 strong innings. Dingler’s hand is still a risk after Wednesday’s foul tip, but the assumption he plays keeps Detroit’s best offensive version intact. Kurtz playing makes the over stronger, though the clubhouse illness note still creates some volatility. Comerica gets warm, humid air, with thunderstorm risk around the evening window. That helps carry if they play clean, but it adds enough delay risk to keep the full-game over behind Detroit’s team total.

The market should be Detroit runs first, then the full-game total. Tigers ML around -130 asks for too much faith in Valdez, especially with Kurtz assumed active. Tigers -1.5 at plus money is playable, but a 6-4 score beats the total plan and kills the run line.

Best bet: Tigers team total over 4.5 (-110), playable to -120. Lean: full-game over 9 (-105). Small add: Tigers -1.5 (+149).

Projected score: Tigers 6, Athletics 4.

Best bet: Tigers TT o4.5 runs (-110)
