Chicago White Sox vs. Boston Red Sox prediction, pick for MLB on Thursday 7/09/26

Boston comes into Rate Field scorching, and this series has only made the gap look wider. The Red Sox are 42-48, but they have won 10 of 12 and all five games on this road trip. They took the first two games in Chicago by 8-1 and 5-0 scores. The White Sox are still 47-44, still above Boston in the standings, and still at home. They have also lost five of seven and scored one run across 21 innings in this series. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

White Sox vs. Red Sox prediction, preview

Patrick Sandoval makes this handicap less comfortable than Boston’s form makes it look. He is making his first MLB start since June 2024 after Tommy John surgery. His final rehab start was strong: five scoreless innings, one hit, one walk, seven strikeouts, and 68 pitches. The broader rehab line was 1.96 ERA across 18.1 innings, so the comeback form is encouraging. The leash still adds volatility, especially if rain interrupts his rhythm. Anthony Kay gives Boston the clearer attack point with a 4.29 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, 5.24 xERA, .350 xwOBA, 17.6% strikeout rate, 8.7% walk rate, 39.1% hard-hit rate, and 23 barrels allowed. His sweeper can miss bats, but the four-seamer has allowed a .506 slugging percentage, and the sinker has allowed a .486 slugging percentage with a 50.8% hard-hit rate.

Boston’s lineup is thinner without Willson Contreras and Jarren Duran, which trims the team-total case. It still gives Kay a right-handed-heavy group with enough contact and speed to create pressure. Ceddanne Rafaela has been the active spark, carrying a .286/.333/.443 line with eight homers, 12 steals, and recent damage in this series. Wilyer Abreu adds 10 homers, 19 doubles, and enough lefty-on-lefty competence to stay dangerous. Connor Wong’s .294/.387/.402 line gives Boston another on-base path, while Romy Gonzalez brings cleanup power against a lefty who allows traffic. Blake Seigler’s leadoff spot also matters for run shape because Kay’s walk and contact profile can stack early baserunners.

Chicago’s counter starts with individual power, not recent offense. Miguel Vargas is the biggest Sandoval problem with 20 homers, a .358 OBP, .483 slugging percentage, .242 ISO, 134 wRC+, 14.3% walk rate, and 16.6% strikeout rate. Colson Montgomery has 23 homers and a .262 ISO, but his 31.6% strikeout rate is a dangerous fit against Sandoval’s changeup history. He is also 0-for-8 in this series. Randal Grichuk gives Chicago another lefty-masher with nine homers, a .590 slugging percentage, and a .320 ISO in a smaller sample. The problem is conversion. Chicago went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position Wednesday, then had its final 13 batters retired.

Red Sox vs. White Sox pick, best bet

The bullpen and context push the full-game side toward Boston more than the total. Boston got six innings from Payton Tolle on Tuesday and seven from Brayan Bello on Wednesday, protecting the leverage group. Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock, Chris Murphy, Zack Kelly, Justin Slaten, and the middle bridge are not overexposed. Chicago’s bullpen seems to have hit a groove after five scoreless innings and nine strikeouts Wednesday, but Trevor Richards is away from the club after throwing two clean innings. The weather is warm enough for offense at about 81 degrees, but the wind is right-to-left instead of carrying straight out. The bigger issue is shower risk, because any mid-game delay could shorten Sandoval’s first start back.

That keeps the bet on Boston, but not through every market. The Red Sox are the hotter team, have the better bullpen setup, and get the more vulnerable starter. Chicago has enough power to punish Sandoval rust, but its offense has not looked close for two nights. Red Sox team total over 4.5 is live, yet weaker without Contreras and Duran. Full-game over 9 has too much bullpen and weather noise.

Best bet: Red Sox ML (-101), playable to -110. The plus-money add is Red Sox -1.5 (+163) for a smaller stake.

Projected score: Red Sox 5, White Sox 3.

Best bet: Red Sox (+100) at White Sox
