Everything You Need to Know Before Cape Fear Episode 6
Let’s break down the latest plot developments during last week’s episode, ‘Faith’:
- Anna is high for the first time in 17 years. Tom is high and unemployed. Natalie and Zach are furious at both of them. The kids now know enough about Max Cady to understand their parents have been lying, which is becoming a weekly Bowden family tradition.
- Zach, in particular, is not doing well. That has been obvious for a while, but “Possum” makes it harder to shrug off as teenage weirdness. He is angry, paranoid, and increasingly attached to the strange religious language Max has been spreading from prison and beyond.
- The episode also flashes back to Max’s time behind bars. After getting attacked in prison, he falls under the influence of a strange older inmate and starts building the belief system that has been poisoning everything in Savannah. Dead wives, unborn children, punishment, sacrifice, all of it. Max does not just want revenge anymore. He has turned revenge into scripture.
- Back in the present, Max is still having his own problems. Someone going by “C” is sending him photos and threatening to expose what he did. He also makes a call to someone he calls “old man.”
- Eventually, Anna and Tom make the terrible decision to go across the street and confront Max at his new house. He is cooking dinner and hanging out with the Bowdens’ cat, Peanut Butter, who he has renamed to Mani. Normal neighbor behavior. Nothing alarming there.
- The conversation gets ugly fast. Max wants Anna and Tom to publicly apologize, explain what they did to him, and give up practicing law. Tom and Anna are not exactly receptive. They still seem to think there is a version of this where they beat Max without telling the truth first.
- Then Max starts talking about Natalie and his dead wife’s frozen eggs, because apparently there was still room for this episode to get more disgusting. He plays it off like a joke, but Max’s jokes usually arrive with a body count somewhere nearby.
- When Anna and Tom get back home, the house is on fire. Papers are burning, and Zach’s severed toe is there too, because this show has developed a real commitment to making that toe everyone’s problem.
- Zach is upstairs, talking into a hole in his closet. Tom goes into the wall and finds Nevaeh, who has apparently been living inside the Bowden house. Not sneaking around. Not breaking in for the night. Living there. She attacks Tom, Anna jumps in, and the whole thing turns into another nightmare inside a house that should probably be condemned for emotional reasons alone.
- By the end of the episode, Zach is gone. Red footprints lead through the house and out toward the street, pointing right toward Max. After six episodes of Max forcing his way into the Bowdens’ lives, Zach may have gone to him willingly, and he may just have been Cady’s son all along.
