We are approaching the midpoint of House of the Dragon Season 3 and the Targaryen civil war is still burning hot. Rhaenyra thought she had everything taken care of when she took King’s Landing in Episode 2, but there are more than simply loose ends to deal with.
Now that the war has changed fronts, what is going to happen next on House of the Dragon? Let’s dive into a few predictions ahead of Episode 4.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4 Predictions
Tumbleton Taken Hostage
After appearing to go home with his tail tucked between his legs, Ormund Hightower is causing problems for Rhaenyra not far from her front doorstep. He is now holding an entire town hostage right along the Roseroad, one that pledged itself to Rhaenyra. Alicent’s cousin is effectively daring the queen to burn him out and show her true, monstrous colors, but she is well aware of the trap he is setting. Ormund will probably be holed up in Tumbleton for a bit, until some outside force breaks the stalement between the Greens and the Blacks.
In Game of Thrones lore, there is famously no man as accursed as the kinslayer, and there has been no shortage of that in House of the Dragon. Second to that, though, are oathbreakers. Jaime Lannister, for instance, wore that shame for decades after turning on his king. Now we have Ormund, who pledged himself to Rhaenyra and promised to take his army back to Oldtown, only to wage war immediately after. At the very least, Ormund has made himself known as an oathbreaker. At worst, fate won’t be on his side. That isn’t to say that bad people always get what’s coming to them in Westeros, but I have a feeling that Ormund will meet a grizzly end once this arc is complete.
When it comes to her small council, Rhaenyra is going to put a fall guy up for Master of Coin. Considering the fact that she and Lord Corlys are beefing at the moment over his sons’ legitimacy, she could pick him for that role.
Healing at Harrenhal
Last time we checked in at Harrenhal in Episode 2, Aemond had killed Ser Simon Strong and taken control of the castle – all before Criston Cole and his forces arrived as reinforcements. The prince regent suffered a nasty stab wound from one of Simon’s grandson’s, though, leaving him to beg Alys Rivers for help.
Based on the preview for Episode 4, Criston will come face-to-face with Alys, demanding to know where Aemond is. Given how she toyed with Deamon in Season 2, Alys likely has plans for Aemond as well. The one-eyed maniac is a mommy’s boy obsessed with dragon power, making him a pretty direct parallel to his uncle. If Alys could wrap a more experienced Daemon around her finger, she can surely do the same with Aemond. At the same time, Daemon refused to grant her Harrenhal, so she may try to switch teams if she can get that reward from Aemond instead.
Return to Rook’s Rest
After getting sprung free from Rhaenyra’s men in Episode 2, Aegon decided that he and Larys Strong would sneak their way to Rook’s Rest. The disgraced and deformed king is convinced that there will be men loyal to his claim stationed there. The corpse of Aegon’s dragon, Sunfyre, is also at the castle, decaying on the walls. Since that battle is where everything went wrong for Aegon – his dragon died and his brother burned him to a crisp – it could be valuable for him to get some closure and say goodbye to his other half. Beyond the emotions he will meet there, though, Aegon will probably discover that the common folk left behind aren’t his biggest fans. He is at least partially responsible for their home getting demolished, plus Rhaenyra is on the Iron Throne now anyways.
Unless he can find a way to bring his dragon back from the dead, Aegon is probably going to stumble right back into captivity.
