Detroit Tigers vs. Athletics prediction, pick for MLB on Wednesday 7/08/26

Detroit won Tuesday’s opener 6-2, and the same problems follow the A’s into Wednesday. The Athletics have dropped four straight, while the Tigers have won six of seven and keep creating pressure innings. Tuesday’s sixth inning showed the difference. Detroit turned singles, doubles, walks, and defensive stress into four runs after the bullpen entered. The Tigers now get Troy Melton, who has allowed one earned run or fewer in five of seven starts. The A’s counter with Jeffrey Springs, who owns a 5.79 ERA and has not won since April 14. That pushes the best angle toward the first five innings. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Detroit Tigers and the Athletics.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Tigers vs. Athletics prediction, preview

Melton has pitched like a starter Detroit can trust immediately. He is 4-1 with a 2.05 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts. Over his last three starts, he has a 0.98 ERA with 18 strikeouts and four walks. He has struck out at least five hitters in five straight starts. The contact numbers back up the run prevention. Hitters have a .162 average, .216 xBA, .347 xSLG, .274 xwOBA, and .303 xwOBAcon against him. He has allowed 35.0% hard contact, 27.6% sweet-spot contact, and only 5.7% barrels. That profile fits against an Athletics lineup hitting .198/.254/.291 over its last 10 games against right-handed pitching.

Springs is where Detroit can separate this game early. He is 3-8 with a 5.79 ERA, and his recent form has been brutal. He allowed six runs in four innings against the Dodgers last time out. Over his last 14 appearances, he has a 7.34 ERA. His June included 30 earned runs in 27 innings and 12 HR allowed. The expected numbers are kinder than the ERA, though Detroit still has enough to attack. Springs has allowed a .358 wOBA, .331 xwOBA, .415 wOBAcon, 10.0% barrels, and a 17.3-degree launch angle. His mix leans on four-seamers, sliders, and changeups. Detroit’s right-handed bats should get hittable looks early.

Dillon Dingler is the best Tigers bat for this matchup. He has 19 HR, 60 RBI, and a middle-order role against a lefty in poor form. His pitch data lines up with Springs’ arsenal. Dingler has a .284 average, .568 SLG, .668 xSLG, and 53.5% hard-hit rate against four-seamers. Against sliders, he owns a .370 average, .815 SLG, .515 wOBA, and .557 xSLG. Spencer Torkelson adds the second right-handed damage piece. He has 90.1 mph average exit velocity, 44.5% hard-hit, 47.6% sweet spot, 14.2% barrels, and a 19.7-degree launch angle. Kevin McGonigle and Riley Greene give the Tigers traffic ahead of those swings.

Athletics vs. Tigers pick, best bet

The A’s still have enough power to make Melton work. Nick Kurtz has 20 HR, 66 RBI, a .410 OBP, and a .915 OPS. Shea Langeliers also has 20 HR, with 45 RBI and an .822 OPS from catcher. Zack Gelof gives them another right-handed bat with gap power, and Jacob Wilson’s return helps the contact floor. The broader form is the issue. The Athletics have a .544 OPS, four HR, 16 extra-base hits, 18 walks, and 73 strikeouts across their last 10 games against righties. They also struck out 12 times Tuesday. Against Melton’s barrel suppression, that puts too much weight on Kurtz or Langeliers landing one big swing.

The bullpen setup gives Detroit another scoring lane after Springs exits. Jacob Lopez threw 63 pitches Tuesday and allowed four earned runs in three innings. Elvis Alvarado also threw 23 pitches, so the A’s have a thinner bridge behind a starter already leaking runs. Detroit’s bullpen had a calmer night. Kyle Finnegan threw 10 pitches, and Jacob Waguespack covered two scoreless innings. Comerica should also play warm, around 87 degrees near 6 p.m. and 85 near 7 p.m., with no rain issue. The park favors doubles, triples, and pressure more than cheap homers. That matches how Detroit opened this series.

The best bet is Tigers F5 -0.5 (-110), playable to -120. It keeps the wager on Melton’s current form and Springs’ first two trips through Detroit’s order. The full-game Tigers moneyline points the right direction, but -137 adds late variance at a worse price. The best plus-money companion is Tigers alt team total over 5.5 (+125). Springs can give Detroit early runs, and the Athletics’ bullpen looks vulnerable again.

Best bet: Tigers F5 -0.5 (-110).

Projected score: Tigers 6, Athletics 3. F5 lean: Tigers 3, Athletics 1.

Best bet: Tigers F5 -0.5 (-110) vs. Athletics
