Boston might be back in that dangerous July pocket. They might have reclaimed their heatwave heaters from ’25. The Red Sox are still 41-48, but the record has started to feel stale. They have won four straight, nine of 11, and opened this road trip 4-0. Tuesday’s 8-1 win at Rate Field had the shape of a team finding length. Monasterio and Rafaela homered early, Contreras doubled in two late, Duran added an RBI single, and Tolle gave Boston six scoreless. Chicago is still 47-43 and holding first place in the AL Central, but the opener gave the White Sox almost nothing. Four hits, one run, and three of those hits from Antonacci. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for today’s baseball game between the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
White Sox vs. Red Sox prediction, preview
Bennett gives Boston the steadier starting point. He is 3-3 with a 3.10 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 40.2 innings, 31 strikeouts, seven walks, and three homers allowed. His barrel rate allowed sits at 6.8%, and his changeup gives Chicago a legitimate problem. He throws it 26.0% of the time, with a .167 average, .167 slugging, .142 wOBA, 33.7% whiff rate, and 25.0% hard-hit rate allowed. Martin has the better record at 9-3 with a 3.08 ERA, but his last turn was messy. He walked five Cleveland hitters, lasted 3.1 innings, and failed to strike out a batter. His six-pitch mix can still navigate lineups, but Boston should see four-seamer, sinker, changeup, slider, cutter, and curveball all before the middle innings.
Boston’s lineup gives Martin immediate pressure. The expected order has Seigler, Rafaela, Abreu, Contreras, Duran, Gonzalez, Durbin, Narváez, and Cheng, so the dangerous stretch arrives by the third hitter. Contreras is the center of the case. He is hitting .287/.381/.545 on the season, and his July line is already .381/.480/.762 with two homers and eight RBI. The contact supports the box score: 90.5 mph average EV, 14.0% barrel rate, .398 wOBA, .385 xwOBA, and 46.2% hard-hit rate. Rafaela and Monasterio supplied the early homers Tuesday, but the sustainable scoring path runs through Abreu getting on, Contreras damaging mistakes, and Duran pressuring Chicago with speed behind them.
Chicago still has the swings that can punish one Bennett mistake. Vargas owns 20-HR damage, a .403 xwOBA, 90.4 mph average EV, 46.2% hard-hit rate, and 15.0% barrels. Colson Montgomery gives the lineup another left-handed power bat near the top. Antonacci is the traffic piece after a three-hit opener, and he is the hitter most capable of making Bennett work from the stretch. The flaw is obvious without Murakami in the order. Chicago’s expected lineup starts Vargas, Grichuk, Montgomery, Meidroth, Braden Montgomery, Antonacci, Romo, Acuña, and Peters. That leaves too much of the run production on Vargas, Montgomery, and Antonacci against a lefty who rarely hands out free innings.
Red Sox vs. White Sox pick, best bet
The late-game map favors Boston. Tolle saved the bullpen Tuesday, and the Red Sox did not need to turn the opener into a leverage scramble. Chicago got only five innings from Schultz, who needed 92 pitches, then watched the bullpen give up four runs in the ninth. That tilts me away from Boston F5 as the main play. Bennett gives the Red Sox a good early base, but the cleaner edge can grow after Martin exits. The weather also helps the bats without forcing a full-game over. Chicago sits in the mid-80s around first pitch, with clear conditions and wind moving right to left. Warm air helps carry, but that wind is not a straight shove toward the seats.
The board is giving too much respect to Chicago’s record and home field. Boston has the hotter lineup, the cleaner bullpen setup, and the starter with the better command profile. Martin can absolutely keep this competitive, which is why Boston -1.5 sits behind the moneyline. The White Sox team total under 3.5 is interesting, but Vargas and Montgomery make that a sweaty route. The full-game over 8 has paths, but Bennett can trim Chicago’s half enough to leave that number short.
Best bet: Red Sox ML -105, playable to -120. The plus-money swing is Red Sox team total over 4.5 +120.
Projected score: Red Sox 5, White Sox 3.
Best bet: Red Sox (-105) at White Sox
